PerthfirstshowedinterestinjoiningtheNationalSoccerLeague(NSL)priortoitsinauguralyearin1977.However,aseriesoflogisticalproblemsandfinancialconcernsmeantthattheleaguewasnotkeentoincludeaWesternAustralian(WA)side.Whilethestaterepresentativesidecontinuedtoperformwellinnationalandinternationalcupcompetitions,WAcontinuedtobeunrepresentedataseniorclubleveluntil1994.[6] In1994,agroupofbusinessmenledbyJoeClaudioformedthePerthKangaroosIFC.Theclubcompetedinthe1994SingaporePremierLeaguealongwiththeDarwinCubs.Atthetime,therewerevisionsofestablishinganAsia-PacificSuperLeaguewhichcouldbecomeasportingandfinancialempireintheeast.Itturnedouttobesomethingofafarce.TheKangaroosfinishedtheleagueseasonundefeatedandeasilywontheSingaporeleaguetitle.However,withdwindlingsupportandresources,theexperimentprovedtobeafinancialdisasterandPerthKangaroosIFCsoonfolded.[7] Earlyseasons(1995–98)[edit] In1995,anotherconsortiumledbyNickTanamadeabidforentryintotheNationalSoccerLeague.PerthGlorywassubsequentlylicensedtojointhe1996–97NSLseasonandon1December1995theclubwasofficiallylaunched.[8][9][2]Fromarelativelyunheraldedstart,theclubwoulddevelopbeyondallexpectationsandhelpcommerciallyre-establishAssociationfootballinastatewhereAustralianrulesfootballdominatesthemediaandRugbyleaguewascommerciallyabouttofail.FormerAdelaideCityplayerandPerthKangarooscoachGaryMarocchiwasappointedcoachforthefirsttwoseasonsandwonmanyfanswithhisbold,attackingstyle.Initiallybelievedtobenothingmorethanatokenparticipant,Perthsurprisedmanybyonlyjustmissingthecutforthefinals;finishing7thand8thin1996–97and1997–98respectively.[10] DougIthierplayingforPerthGloryin1997 IntheGlory'sinauguralseason,playerssuchasNSL-title-winningsweeperVinkoBuljubašić,Perth-basedstrikerBobbyDespotovskiandyounglocalstarVasKalogeracoswerebroughtintotheteamandachievedcultstatus.NewZealandinternationalGavinWilkinsonwasalsosignedwhilelocalmidfielderGarethNavenwasappointedcaptain.[11]IntheirfirstmatchintheNSL,PerthGlorylosttoSydneyOlympic4–1,withveteranScotAlanMacKenziescoringthefirstgoalforGloryandDougIthierwinningthefirstMan-of-the-Matchaward.[12][13][14]Largecrowdsandgoodresultssoonfollowedwithanexcitingwinoverdefendingchampions,theMelbourneKnights,thrillingahugecrowd.[15]GloryneededonlyapointintheirfinalmatchoftheseasonbutweredefeatedbytheKnightsandfelljustshortofmakingthefinals.[16]GlorymidfielderPaulStrudwickwassentoffduringthematchincontroversialcircumstanceswhiletroubleinthecrowdalsomarredthematch.[10] Inthe1997–98season,despiteagainnarrowlymissingthetopsixandsigningmorehigh-profileplayerslikeErnieTapai,DannyHayandNigeriansSamsonSiasiaandPeterAnosike,[17]itwasadisappointingseasonfortheGlory.[18] Stangeera(1998–2001)[edit] FansupportwasfurtherconsolidatedintheeraofBerndStange.TheformerEastGermannationalcoachbecameamediastarafterreplacingGaryMarocchiwhowassacked.Michd'Avray,aformerEnglandunder-21internationalwasappointedasStange'sassistantcoach.[19][20] Inhisfirstseason,StangehadtakenGlorytotheirfirst-everfinalsseriesandhadfalleninthepreliminaryfinalagainstSydneyUnited.[21]WithnewsigningsJohnMarkovskiandConBoutsianisfittingstraightintotheside,localplayerJamieHarnwellstartedtodevelopintoakeydefenderandmadethesteptoreplacetheinjuredVinkoBuljubašić.[22]Unfortunately,ahorrorformslumpattheheightofsummerdeniedtheGloryatop-twoplacebutmassivecrowdsstillattendedtheirtwohomefinalsattheWACAGroundagainstAdelaideCityandMarconiStallions.[21][23][24] Inthefollowingseason,GloryrecruitedyoungplayersIvanErgić,JasonPetkovićandOlyrooKaseyWehrman.[25]Theclubfinishedfirstintheregularseasonandwerecrownedminorpremiersforthefirsttime,allowingthemtoenterthefinalseriesatthemajorsemifinal.[26]Inthefinalsseries,theGlorylosttoWollongongWolves1–0atBrandonPark,theWolves'homeground,inthefirstlegofthemajorsemifinal.ThesecondlegofthemajorsemifinalwasheldatSubiacoOval,ratherthantheirregularvenuePerthOval,toaccommodateanexpectedlargercrowd.Inthematch,PerthGlorywon2–0overtheWolves,2–1onaggregate,toqualifyforthegrandfinal.Thecrowdof42,764wasanAustralianrecordforaclubsoccermatch.[27]Inthewakeoftherecordcrowd,theWesternAustraliangovernmentannouncedapurpose-builtstadiumfortheGloryincentralPerth.[28][29]The1999–2000grandfinalisrememberedasoneofthemostthrillingmatchesinNSLhistory.PerthagainfacedtheWolvesandled3–0athalftimeagainstamiserableWolvesoutfit;thinkingthegamewaswon,StangesubstitutedkeyGloryplayersScottMiller,BobbyDespotovskiandIvanErgić.Yet,theWolvesralliedsuperblyandPerthexperiencedaseriesofdefensiveblunderstobepeggedbackto3–3atfull-time.Perthsubsequentlylostonpenalties,butthisdefiningmomentgalvanisedtheteamandwouldbeamotivatingforceforyearstocome.JamesAfkos,ayoungdefenderandsonofGloryco-ownerPaulAfkossawhispenaltysaved,whichgavethewintotheWolves.[30]TheWolvessidealsofeaturedplayerssuchasScottChipperfield,SašoPetrovskiaswellasMattHorsleyandStuartYoungwhowouldgoontoplaywiththeGloryinlateryears.ThelosswasacrushingblowtoGlorybuttheteamhaddonewelldespiteproblemsStangehadwithstarssuchasVasKalogeracosandConBoutsianiswhohadbothlefttheclub.[25]Stangehadalsobeentoldmidwaythroughtheseasonthathiscontractwouldnotberenewed—butwell-organisedsupporterprotestandmediapressureforcedTanatochangehismindandpubliclyannouncetheU-turnbeforeahomematchagainsttheCanberraCosmos.[31] Inspiteoftheloss,Stangewaspopularwiththepublicbuthistimehadcomebytheendofthe2000–01season.Glorywastooinconsistentduringtheseason,sufferingfrommoreplayerdisharmonyinvolvingStange'stactics,andfallingjustshortofatop-twospot.Gloryhadattimesplayedgoodattackingfootballbutprovedunabletodosoconsistently.[32]Inthefinalsseries,theGloryonceagaincameupagainsttheMelbourneKnightsanddrew0–0inMelbournedespitehavingJamieHarnwellsentoff.FollowingthematchMelbourneKnightsfansattackedtheteamandtheirbusastheytriedtoleaveSunshineStadium.ItisbelievedthatthefanswereangeredbyaSerbiansalutemadebyBobbyDespotovskitowardsMelbourneKnightsfans,aclubwhotraditionallyhasalargeCroatiansupportbase.[33]InthereturnlegGlorywereeliminatedfollowinga2–2draw.TheKnightshadgoneintoanearlyleadwithgoalsinslipperyconditionsbeforetwolategoalstotheGlorybutitwasn'tenoughwiththeKnightswinningthroughtheawaygoalrule.[34]Despitesigninghigh-profilerecruitssuchasDamianMori(whohadformedaprolificpartnershipwithBobbyDespotovskiupfront)andBradMaloneywhilealsoholdingontoyoungstarLjuboMiličevićtheGloryhadunderachievedandStangewassackedbyNickTana.[35][36] D'AvrayeraandendofNSL(2001–04)[edit] DespitetheflairofStange'sreign,itwouldtakethemoretacticalapproachofMichd'AvraytofinallywintheNSLChampionship.Whilelessflamboyantthanhispredecessor,d'Avraysuccessfullytransformedtheteamwithadifferentstrategytothepreviouscoaches.Theattacking5–3–2,whichsawalmostasmanygoalsconcededasscored,wasreplacedwitha4–4–2.Somemayarguethattheteambegantoplayalessattractiveformofthegame,butnobodycouldarguewiththeresults.In2001–2,theteamnearlywenttheentireseasonundefeatedwithasidethatonlyhadformerAdelaideCitymidfielderBradHassellasamajoraddition.[37]Afterscrapingthroughinthesecondlegofthemajorsemi-finalagainstNewcastle,GloryfacedSydneyOlympicinthegrandfinalatasold-outSubiacoOval.Whilethe2000FinalwasoneofthegreatgamesofdomesticAustralianassociationfootball,the2002finalwasatightandtenseaffairwithGloryhardlygettingashotontargetduetothefactthattheylackedanybiteinthemidfieldandhadtheirtwostrikersmarkedoutofthegame.AnteMilicicwasontargetforOlympicthoughandhisgoalearlyinthesecondhalfwasenoughforOlympictowin1–0andbreaktheheartsofGloryfansonceagain.[38] Maloneylefttheclubattheendofthe2002seasonbuthisreplacementprovedtobeakeyinGloryfinallygettingthatelusivetitle.GermanmidfielderAndreGumprechtwasbroughtintotheclubthankstoStangeandmadeaninstantimpact.[39]WiththeNSLdisintegratingaroundthem,GloryandOlympicweretheonlytwosemi-decentteamsstillleftintheleaguetogalvanisetheirmidfieldandfoughtitoutfortopspotallseason.Glorymissedoutontheleaguetitle,finishingonepointbehindOlympic.InMarch2003,theNSLstrippedtheclubofthreepointsafterrulingthatGumprechthadbeenplayedbeforehehadbeenregistered.[40]GlorypickedupSoccerooSimonColosimohalfwaythroughtheseasonandeventuallywontherighttohostthe2003GrandFinalaftercomingoutontopofanew,confusingandconvolutedleaguetablefinalsformatthathaddraggedapoorseasonout.IntheGrandFinalGlorytookthegametoOlympicandfollowingaheadedgoalfrominthefirsthalffromHarnwellitwasalloverlateinthematchwhenMorisawhisshotdribbleoverthelineindramaticfashion.2–0wastheresultandd'AvrayhaddeliveredtheGrandFinalvictoryGloryhadyearnedfor.[41] InthefinalNSLseasonin2003–04,GloryonlyhadParramattaPowerasahugethreatwiththeWesternSydneyclubbuyingupbigfortheseason.PlayerslikeFernandoRech,MichaelBeauchampandAnteMiličićwerebroughtinalongwithGlorymidfieldersGumprechtandColosimoinwhatseemedtobeahugeblowtothechampions.Inresponsetotheplunderingoftheirengineroomd'AvraysignedupSydneyOlympictitlewinnersTomPondeljak,WayneSrhojandJadeNorthwhilealsogettingformerSocceroodefenderandWestAustralianShaunMurphybackfromtheUnitedKingdom.[42]InaseasonwhereGloryagainwentheadtoheadwithateamfromSydney,ParramattabeattheGloryathome4–2andthenaway2–0tohostthefinaleverNSLGrandFinal.[43]GlorythrashedAdelaideUnitedinthepreliminaryfinalandfacedParramattaatParramattaStadiumtotryandgoforbacktobackvictories.[44]Inthepouringrain,Parramattawerebroughtdowntotheleveloftheiropponentsandscrappedforeveryballinamatchdevoidofmanychances.MoriwastedtwosittersbeforeyoungstrikerNickMrđanailedashotpastClintBoltontoclaimthegoldengoalandwinthematchforGloryandtheirsecondNSLtitle.[45]Itwasaround2001thattheleagueshowedsignsofsignificantdeterioration.Acombinationofcentralmismanagement,conflictsofinterestandpoorsponsorshipwouldeventuallyleadtoagovernmentinquiryandtheremovaloftheleadershipofSoccerAustralia.[46]Eventually,therelaunchedandrenamedFootballFederationAustraliaannouncedthecreationoftheA-Leaguein2005.ThefinancialbackingandbusinessnousofchairmanNickTanahadensuredtheviabilityandsuccessoftheclubduringtheearlierdiretimes –andensureditaplaceinthefutureofthegameinAustralia.[47] Declineandownershiptroubles(2005–09)[edit] InJanuary2005,formerLiverpoolandEnglandstarSteveMcMahonwasappointedascoach.[48]TheclubchangeditsnamefromthePerthGlorySoccerClubtothePerthGloryFootballClubwithanewlogobeingunveiledataseasonlaunchinFebruary.[49]The2005–06seasonsawacompleteoverhauloftheplayingsquad,withSimonColosimoandformerSunderlandandLeedsstrikerBrianDeaneaskeysignings.OthernotablesigningsincludedfutureyoungstarsNickWardandBillyCeleski.Earlyresultsinfriendliesagainstlocaloppositionwerenotgreat,butPerthbecamethefirstteamtodefeatSydneyFC,winning1–0inthesemi-finalofthe2005A-LeaguePre-SeasonChallengeCupbeforelosinginthefinal0–1totheCentralCoastMariners.[50]Perth'swoefulrecruitingstrategywassoonevidentwiththeearlydepartureofstarimportBrianDeaneaftersevengames.AnotherMcMahonrecruit,NorthernIrelandjuniorinternationalNeilTeggart,quittheclubpriortothestartoftheregularseason.DeanewasreplacedbyDamianMori,aformerPerthGlorystriker.Originallyonathree-gametemporarycontract,aftersomeimpressiveperformancesMoristayedfortherestoftheseasonandfinishedwithsevengoals.[51]However,theclubcontinuedtobedoggedbyproblemswhichwouldonlybelaterrevealedtothepublic.SteveMcMahonwassubjecttoconstantmediacriticismoverhiscoachingstyleandwasaccusedofnepotismbysigninghisson,SteveMcMahonJr,whowasofquestionabletalent.Rumoursalsosurfacedthatplayerswereplanningtostagearevoltagainstthecoach.On7December,theclubreportedthatthepartieshad"amicably"chosentogoseparateways.[52]On9December2005,theclubannouncedthatassistantcoachAlanVestwouldmoveintotheheadcoachrolefortheremainderoftheseason,withstrikerDamianMoritakingonadualroleasplayer-coachafterbeingnamedashisassistant.[53]Thecoach'sdeparturewasmerelyasymptomofdeepertroubles.PoorperformancessawPerthmissoutonqualificationforthefinalsforthefirsttimesince1998.DwindlingsupportfromchairmanNickTana,ashelookedtosellhis75percentstakeintheclub,seemedtounderpinageneraldeclineinclubfortunes.[54]AftertheRound20matchagainstSydneyFC,AlanVesthintedthatthecurrentplayergroupwereincapableofachievinganythingbetterandstatedthat"cliques"hadbeenformedunderminingclubharmony.Tocapoffabadseason,WesternQBEannouncedtheywerewithdrawingasmajorsponsorafterbeingassociatedwiththeclubfor8years. On1May2006,FootballFederationAustraliarelievedownerNickTanaofownershipandmanagementofPerthGlory.[55]The2006–07seasonsawahostofchanges.InJuly2006,AustralianinternationalStanLazaridissignedatwo-yeardeal.[56]ThiswasquicklyfollowedbytheappointmentofRonSmithasheadcoachandMichellePhillipsasCEOon26July.[57]Unfortunately,staryouthplayerNickWarddidnothonourhistwo-yearcontractanddefiedtheadviceoftheFFAandleftforQueensParkRangersinEngland.[58]InamajorbonusfortheGlory,longtimepartnerandsponsorWesternQBEInsurancegaveashowoffaithandsignedonastheclub'smajorsponsorinround18,untiltheendofthe2007–2008season.WesternQBEhadpreviouslybeensponsoroftheclubsince1998,butdecidedagainstresigningadealatthestartofthe2006–2007season,leavingtheGloryinaverytoughsituation-withoutanysponsororowners.ButinDecember2006,signswereshownthatownershadbeenfoundbytheFFA,andsoWesternQBEwerereinstated.TheFFA(holdersofthePerthGlorylicence)announcedon23February2007thattheGlorywastobehandedovertoatriumvirateofowners:TonySage,BrettMcKeonandJohnSpence.Thisannouncementendedalmostayearofuncertainty.[59]ThenewGloryownerswereambitiousintheirplans,bringingnewhopetoaclubthatwassomewhatpoor,bothoffthefieldandon,in2006–07season. The2007–08seasonsawthearrivalsofnew,promisingadditionstotheside.TheGlorysignedAnthonyDanze,BillyCeleski,DinoDjulbic,AISgraduateJimmyDowney,NaumSekulovski,formerPerthSoccerClubandYoungSocceroosgoalkeeperTandoVelaphi,NikitaRukavytsya,SydneyFCplayerNikolaiTopor-Stanley,MiltonKeynesDonswingerNickRizzo,CroatianstrikerMateDragičević,HaydenFoxe,MitchellPrenticeandstrikerJamesRobinson.[60]ProbablythebiggestcoupfortheGloryforthe2007–08seasonwasthesigningofaone-yearsponsorshipdealwithSingaporelistedsteelmanufacturerDelongHoldings,worthA$750,000,oneofthebiggestintheA-League,whofeaturedonthebackoftheGloryjersey.[61]Inthe2007A-LeaguePre-SeasonChallengeCup,theGlorysurprisedmanybymakingittotheirsecondfinal,despitenotplayingasinglegameinWesternAustralia,whichtheylost1–2againstAdelaideUnited.[62]ThenewleagueseasonstartedpoorlyfortheGlory,winlessafter12roundsandattractingonlyfour-figureattendances.Asaresult,RonSmithcameunderincreasingpressurefromfansandthemediatodeliverresults.Theteamstruggledtoscoregoals,withMateDragičevićinparticularbecomingafigureofderision.GlorylegendBobbyDespotovskipubliclycalledforSmithtobereplaced,andon4November,Smithwassackedasmanager.[63]DavidMitchellwashandedthecaretakersrolefortherestoftheseason.[63]TheboldneweraofPerthGlorybeganthesameday,whenitwasannouncedtheGlorywereformingastrategicalliancewithEnglishPremierLeagueclubManchesterCity.[64]A4–1thrashingofNewcastleinMitchell'sdebutmatchbodewellfortimesahead,[65]withGlory'sfirstwinathomeinayearagainstMelbourneandGlory'sfirst-everleaguewinoverSydney.[66][67]Mitchellwonfouranddrewtwooftheremaining10gamesofthe2007–08season,withtheclubfinishing7thoverall.[68]
