Duncan,B.,L.N.Lamsal,A.M.Thompson,Y.Yoshida,Z.Lu,D.Streets,M.Hurwitz,andK.E.Pickering(2016),Aspace-based,high-resolutionviewofnotablechangesinurbanNOxpollutionaroundtheworld(2005–2014),J.Geophys.Res.,121,doi:10.1002/2015JD024121.Abstract: Nitrogenoxides(NOx=NO+NO2)areproducedduringcombustionprocessesand,thusmayserveasaproxyforfossilfuel-basedenergyusageandcoemittedgreenhousegasesandotherpollutants.Weusehigh-resolutionnitrogendioxide(NO2)datafromtheOzoneMonitoringInstrument(OMI)toanalyzechangesinurbanNO2levelsaroundtheworldfrom2005to2014,findingcomplexheterogeneityinthechanges.WediscussseveralpotentialfactorsthatseemtodeterminetheseNOxchanges.First,environmentalregulationsresultedinlargedecreases.TheonlylargeincreasesintheUnitedStatesmaybeassociatedwiththreeareasofintensiveenergyactivity.Second,elevatedNO2levelswereobservedovermanyAsian,tropical,andsubtropicalcitiesthatexperiencedrapideconomicgrowth.TwoofthelargestincreasesoccurredoverrecentlyexpandedpetrochemicalcomplexesinJamnagar(India)andDaesan(Korea).Third,pollutiontransportfromChinapossiblyinfluencedtheRepublicofKoreaandJapan,diminishingtheimpactoflocalpollutioncontrols.However,inChina,therewerelargedecreasesoverBeijing,Shanghai,andthePearlRiverDelta,whichwerelikelyassociatedwithlocalemissioncontrolefforts.Fourth,civilunrestanditseffectonenergyusagemayhaveresultedinlowerNO2levelsinLibya,Iraq,andSyria.Fifth,spatialheterogeneitywithinseveralmegacitiesmayreflectmixedeffortstocopewithairqualitydegradation.Wealsoshowthepotentialofhigh-resolutiondataforidentifyingNOxemissionsourcesinregionswithacomplexmixofsources.Intensivemonitoringoftheworld’stropical/subtropicalmegacitieswillremainapriority,astheirpopulationsandemissionsofpollutantsandgreenhousegasesareexpectedtoincreasesignificantly.
