Thisisprobablywhereisideaof'Godisdead'comesfrom(anotherfamoussayingfromthisbook)thoughwherethissayingoccurs,itismoretodowithZarathustramourningaprophetandpityshimbysaying'doeshenotrealisethatGodisdead'.Now,thisideaisnotthatGodhimselfisdead(becauseNeiztschedoesnotbelieveinGod–heisanatheist)butratherthatthegodthatwascreatedbyhumanityisdeadinthathumanityhasreachedapointwheretheyhaverealisedthattheynolongerneedtheirgodandhavewalkedawayfromhiminunbelief,andassuchbecausenobodybelievesinthisgodanymorethereisnolongeranybelieftokeepthisgodsustained,andthusgodisdead.Thoughfastforwardtoourtimeandwediscoverthattheneedtobelieveinagodisaliveandwell,andassuchtheconceptofgodisstillaliveandwell–andalsonoticethatIamnotcapitalisinggod,becausethisisnotthebigGGodthatIbelievein,butrathertheconceptofagodthatsocietyfeelsthattheyneedtobelieveintogivethemcomfortandhope. Now,twoandahalfthousandyearslaterweareenteringanothersiesmicshiftinthethoughtofWesternCivilisation,andNeiztscheishailingbacktothefoundingofZorastrianphilosophytoactasabasisforthisnewshiftinmodernthought.Whatwashappeningnowasthattheideaoftheeternalconflictbetweenthetruthandtheliewaschangingtobecomenotsomuchaconflict,butratherameansofprogression.Truthandlienolongerstandforeveropposingeachother,butrathertheyactasopposingforcesthatseektofindacommonground,andoncethatcommongroundisfoundtheycometogethertoformacompletelynewtruth–Hegel'sdialectic. Now,letusconsiderthedoctrineoftheubermensch.Ifindthatbytranslatingtheubermenschtosupermancanbeverymisleadingbecausemanyofusequatesupermanwiththis: ThisisnottheideathatthatIbelievedNeiztschewasspeculatingon,justasIdoubtJerrySeigelhadNeiztscheinmindwhenhecreatedtheeponymoussuperhero.However,theideaofthesuperhero,atleastwithregardstotheideathatcomesoutinthecomics,iswhatNeiztschewasexploringinhiswritings.Inaway,myunderstandingoftheubermenschimpliestheideaofhumanityevolvingfromitscurrentstateintoanewstate,andthisevolutionisaselfconsciousevolutionthatwedecidewewanttodo.Inawayitisreachingapointwhereweareincontrolofourselvesandnotdominatedbyourlustsandpassions.Itisreachingthepointwherewecansayno,andwecanforcethatdesirefromourmind,andthemorecontrolwehaveoverourdesires,thelesscontrolthosedesireshaveoverus.Inawayitformsabasisformodernpsychologywherepsychologistsseektoteachus'thoughtcontrol'meaningthatwhenaninvasivethoughtentersoutmind,wecrushthatthoughtbeforeitdominatesus. Thisiswheretheconceptofthewilltopowercomesin.Thewilltopoweriswhereweexerciseourwilltocontrolourdesiresandourpassions,andinturnourthoughts.Thusbyhavingthewillwehavepowerbecausewehavepoweroverourselvesandourlives,andwearenotdominatedorcontrolledbytheworldaroundus.Itisthepointwherewerearebombardedwithadvertisingtobuythingsthatwedon'tneedtobeabletosay'Idon'tneedthat'andthereforedonotbuyit.Itisthewilltobeabletocontrolourpassionsanddesirestothepointwherewearenotlivingunderperpetualdebt.
