ThelatesteditionofWHOAQGsforambientairpollutantswaspublishedin2006,andincludedrecommendationsfortheclassicalairpollutantsparticulatematter(PM),ozone(O3),nitrogendioxide(NO2)andsulfurdioxide(SO2). Sincethen,theevidencebaseforadversehealtheffectsrelatedtoshort-andlong-termexposuretothesepollutantshasbecomemuchlargerandbroader.TheWHAResolutionrecognizedtheroleofWHOAQGsforbothambientairqualityandindoorairqualityinprovidingguidanceandrecommendationsforcleanairthatprotecthumanhealth.Inparticular,itrequestedtheDirector-GeneraltostrengthenWHOcapacitiesinthefieldofairpollutionandhealththroughthedevelopmentandregularupdateofWHOAQGsinordertofacilitatedecisionmaking,andtoprovidesupportandguidancetoMSintheirefficientimplementation.Asaresultin2016WHOhasstartedtheworktowardstheupdateoftheGlobalAirQualityGuidelines.Theprojectisbenefittingfromfundsand/orin-kindsupportfromtheEuropeanCommission(DG-Environment),theGermanFederalMinistryfortheEnvironment,NatureConservation,BuildingandNuclearSafety,theSwissFederalOfficefortheEnvironmentandtheUSEnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA).Itisexpectedtoprovideup-to-daterecommendationstocontinueprotectingpopulationsworldwidefromtheadversehealtheffectsofambientairpollution.
