Theconceptofmarginalutilitygrewoutofattemptsby19th-centuryeconomiststoanalyzeandexplainthefundamentaleconomicrealityofprice.Theseeconomistsbelievedthatpricewaspartlydeterminedbyacommodity’sutility—thatis,thedegreetowhichitsatisfiesaconsumer’sneedsanddesires.Thisdefinitionofutility,however,ledtoaparadoxwhenappliedtoprevailingpricerelations.Theeconomistsobservedthatthevalueofdiamondswasfargreaterthanthatofbread,eventhoughbread,beingessentialtothecontinuationoflife,hadfargreaterutilitythandiddiamonds,whichweremerelyornaments.Thisproblem,knownastheparadoxofvalue,wassolvedbytheapplicationoftheconceptofmarginalutility.Becausediamondsarescarceandthedemandforthemwasgreat,thepossessionofadditionalunitswasahighpriority.Thismeanttheirmarginalutilitywashigh,andconsumerswerewillingtopayacomparativelyhighpriceforthem.Breadismuchlessvaluableonlybecauseitismuchlessscarce,andthebuyersofbreadpossessenoughtosatisfytheirmostpressingneedforit.Additionalpurchasesofbreadbeyondpeople’sappetiteforitwillbeofdecreasingbenefitorutilityandwilleventuallyloseallutilitybeyondthepointatwhichhungeriscompletelysatisfied.
