Onceyou'vemadethedecisiontopursueacollegeeducation,it'stimetofigureoutexactlywhattypeofdegreetopursue.Thereareavarietyofcollegedegreesandeachhasadvantagesanddisadvantages.Thereisn'tjustone"right"typeofcollegedegree.Thevalueofacollegedegreeisafunctionofwhatthecollegedegreeoffersyou.Yourjobistodeterminewhichcollegedegree,orcertificate,besthelpsyouachieveyourpersonal,educationalandcareerobjectives.Forexample,ifyouwanttobecomeadoctor,earningabachelorofartsinhistoryprobablyisn'tgoingtobeasbeneficialasanundergraduatedegreeinbiologythatwillprepareyoutotaketheMCAT.Butthenagain,ifyou'repassionishistory,maybeminoringinhistoryandmajoringinbiologyisthewinningcombination.Ifyouwanttopursueacareerinbusiness,thenaMastersofBusinessAdministration(MBA)wouldbethelogicalchoice,right?Surprisingly,manysuccessfulbusinessmenandentrepreneursneverearnedanMBA.Therearemanyeducationalpathsandchoicestoconsider.Belowwe'lloutlineanddiscussthedifferenttypesofcollegedegreesandhelpyoubeginexploringyouroptions. Tolearnmoreabouttypesofdegrees,selectacategorybelow: ProfessionalCertificates UndergraduateDegrees TransferDegrees AssociateDegrees BachelorDegrees GraduateDegrees MasterDegrees DoctoralDegrees ProfessionalDegrees SpecialistDegrees ProfessionalCertificatesandLicenses Earningacollegedegreeisn'talwaystheanswer.Sometimesaprofessionalcertificatemakesalotmoresense–especiallyifyourdecisiontopursueahighereducationisbasedoneconomics.Careersuccesscanoftenbeobtainedaseasilywithaprofessionalcertificationasitcanwithatraditionalcollegedegree–especiallyinhighlytechnicalfieldswhereemployersaremoreconcernedwithyourskillsetthanyourcollegecredential.Earningaprofessionalcertificationisalsoalotlessexpensive. Unlikeundergraduatedegreeprograms,manyofwhichfocusonliberalartseducation,professionalcertificationprogramsfocusalmostexclusivelyonskillsdevelopment–skillsthataredirectlyrelevanttoperformingaspecificjoborfunction.Onthedownside,somecertificationprogramsaresonarrowinfocusthattheymissthedepthandwell-roundededucationprovidedbyacollegedegree.Still,oneeducationalpathisnotnecessarilybetterthantheother–theysimplyofferdifferentbenefits.Ifyouwanttobecomeanelectricalengineer,acollegedegreemakesmoresensethanaprofessionalcertification.Ifyouwanttobecomeanelectrician,allyouneedisaprofessionalcertification. Aprofessionalcertificationistypicallyalotmoreeconomicalthanacollegedegree.Whereaprofessionalcertificationcanrunanywherefrom$5,000to$15,000,acollegedegreetypicallycoststwotothreetimesthatamount.Onadollarfordollarbasis,aprofessionalcertificationmaymakealotmoresense.Theeconomicsofearningaprofessionalcertificationmakeevenmoresensewhenyouconsiderthatmanyprofessionalcertificationsthesedayscanbecompletedinjustayearortwoandcanprepareyouforacareerjustaseffectivelyasamoreexpensive"traditional"four-yearcollegedegree. Inmanytrades,certificationor"licensing"isarequirementofemployment.Insomevocationaloccupations,professionalcertificationandlicensingaresynonymous.Certificationandlicensingrequirementsareregulatedonastatebystatebasis.Inmanystates,professionalcertificationisaprerequisiteforlicensing.Inothers,it'spartofthelicensingprocessitself.Beforedecidingonaprofessionalcertification,orcollegedegree,you'llwanttobeclearinyourownmindwhatyourcareerobjectivesareandthoroughlyinvestigatealleducational,certificationand/orlicensingrequirements. UndergraduateDegrees Whenpeoplelooselyrefertoa"college"degree,moreoftenthannotthey'rereferringtoafour-year,undergraduatebachelor'sdegree.However,thereareseveralcategoriesofundergraduatedegrees,whichalsoincludeassociatedegrees. Undergraduatedegreesarealsoreferredtoaspost-secondarydegrees.Thatis,theyaredegreesearnedaftercompletelyasecondaryeducation(ie.,highschooldiplomaorGED)butbeforeagraduatedegree.Undergraduatedegrees–bachelor'sdegreesinparticular–usuallyhaveageneraleducation,electiveandcore(major)component.Generaleducationcurriculumfocusesonabreadthofhighereducationsubjectsandskillsincludingwriting,mathematics,historyandscience.Corecurriculumincludesmajorcourseworkrequiredtobecomeproficientinaspecificareaofstudy.Electivecurriculum,whileinlinewithastudent'smajor,ischosenindependentlybyeachstudent.Undergraduatestudentsattendingthesamecollege,regardlessoftheirmajor,aretypicallyrequiredtocompletethesamegeneraleducationcourses.Majorcoursesaredeterminedbyindividualdepartmentsandacademiccolleges.Electivecoursesarechosenbyeachstudentundertheguidanceoftheirmajordepartmentandanacademicadvisor. TherearetwotypesofundergraduatedegreesrecognizedintheUnitedStates:AssociateandBachelor.Associatedegreesareofferedprimarilythroughcommunitycolleges.Therearehoweverafewvocationalschoolsandfour-yearcollegesthatalsoofferassociatedegrees.Earninganassociatedegreetypicallyrequirestwoyearsoffull-timestudy.Associatedegreesaredesignedtopreparestudentsforacareer,orqualifytopursueabachelor'sdegree.Associatedegreesdesignedtopreparestudentstopursueabachelor'sdegreeatafour-yearcollegeoruniversityareknownastransferdegrees(oracademicdegrees).Associatedegreesdesignedtopreparestudentstopursuecareeropportunitiesupongraduationaresometimesreferredtoasoccupationaldegrees.Bachelordegreesareofferedbymajorcollegesanduniversitiesandarefour-yearsinduration.Bachelor'sdegreescanbecareerfocusedordesignedtopreparestudentsforgraduateschool. TransferDegree Studentsoftenpursueanassociatedegreeforoneoftworeasons.First,toprepareforacareer.Second,topreparetoattendafour-yearcollegewheretheycanearnabachelor'sdegree.Anassociatedegreethatisusedasasteppingstoneintoabachelor'sdegreeprogramisoftenreferredtoasatransferdegree. Notallassociatedegreescanbeusedastransferdegrees,andnotallcollegesthatofferassociatedegreesoffertransferdegrees.Thekeytoatransferdegreeisthatittransfers.Regionallyaccreditedcollegesanduniversities(whichincludemostmajorcollegesanduniversitiesintheUnitedStates)typicallyonlyaccepttransfercreditsfromothercollegesandinstitutionsthatareregionallyaccredited.Thatmeansinorderforthecreditsearnedthroughanassociatedegreetobetransferable,theymustbeearnedataregionallyaccreditedcommunitycollege.Ifthereisanychanceyou'llpursueabachelor'sdegreeaftercompletingyourassociatedegree,you'llwanttomakesureyouearnyourassociatedegreefromaregionallyaccreditedhighereducationinstitution. Whenawardedbyaregionallyaccreditedcommunitycollege,thecreditsearnedthroughanassociatedegreewillusuallyfulfillmanyofthegeneraleducationrequirementsofa4-yearbachelor'sdegree.Whenselectingacommunitycollegetoearnatransferdegree,makesureitisregionallyaccreditedandthatyoucheckwiththe4-yearcollegeyouwanttoattendafteryougraduatetomakecertainthecreditsyouearnthroughyourassociatedegreewilltransfer. AssociateDegree Associatedegreesaretwo-yearundergraduatedegreesawardedbycommunitycolleges,vocationalschools,andasmallnumberoffour-yearcollegesanduniversities.Afewschoolsofferacceleratedassociatedegreeprogramsthatcanbecompletedinlesstime.Thereareseveralbenefitstoearninganassociatedegreebeforeearningabachelor'sdegree.Oneofthebiggestbenefitsisthelowercostofcredits.Manystudentswillcompleteanassociatedegreeandthenapplytheircreditstowardthecompletionofabachelor'sdegree,loweringtheiroverallcostofearningabachelor'sdegree.Aslongastheassociatedegreeisawardedbyaregionallyaccreditedcommunitycollege,thecreditsshouldtransfertoafour-yearcollegeoruniversity. Associatedegreesarealsoidealforstudentswhowanttoprepareforentry-levelcareerpositionsinastimelyafashionaspossible.Associatedegreesofferedatvocationalschoolsandtechnicaltrainingcentersareoftenveryskillsoriented.Theseprogramsarelaserfocusedonhelpingstudentsacquiretheknowledgeandskillsnecessarytoqualifyforentry-levelpositionsfollowinggraduation.Associatedegreesthatareintendedtohelpstudentsprepareforacareeraresometimesreferredtoasoccupationaldegrees. GraduateDegrees Agraduatedegreeisanadvanceddegreethatfocusesonaspecificacademicfieldofstudyorprofessionaldiscipline(ie.,Law,Medicine,Business,etc.)Thegeneralprerequisiteformostgraduatedegreeprogramsisabachelor'sdegree–ofteninarelatedfieldofstudy.Historically,graduatedegreeswereacademicinnature,andresearchoriented.Today,mostgraduatedegreesfocusonappliedsciencesandareprofessionalinscopeandnature.Manygraduatedegreeshaveasplitfocusbetweenacademiaandindustry.Agraduatedegreecantakeasmanyaseightyearstocomplete,oraslittleastwo. Unlikeundergraduatedegreesthathaveageneraleducationcomponent,graduatedegreesofferamuchmoreindepthdisciplinaryfocus.Inaddition,theexpectationforgraduatestudentsismuchhigherthanitisforundergraduatestudents.Graduatestudentsareexpectedtoproduceamuchhigherstandardofacademicworkandperformindependentresearch.Graduateprogramsaremorecompetitivethanundergraduateprograms.Notonlyisgettingacceptedtoagraduateprogramcompetitive,theprogramsthemselvesarequitecompetitive. MasterDegree Amaster'sdegreeisagraduatedegreestudentsoftenpursuefollowingthecompletionofabachelor'sdegree.Eventhoughamaster'sdegreeismorerigorousthanabachelor'sdegree,ittypicallyonlytakestwoyearstocomplete,comparedtothefouryearsrequiredtocompleteabachelor'sdegree.Amaster'sdegreefocusesonaspecificdisciplineorareaofstudyanddoesnothaveageneraleducationrequirement.Mostmaster'sdegreesareprofessionalinnature,designedtohelpstudentsdevelopadvancedskillsthatwillhelpthemintheircareer.Moreandmoreemployersnowseekapplicantswithamaster'sdegree.
