Forexample,angelfish,tetras,barbs,corydoras,andgouramisliveinblackwaterconditionsinthewildandthisisjusttonameafew! Catappa(Indianalmondleaves)arealsohighlyrecommendedforbettas. Now,youmaybethinking,‘Howistheblackwatereffectcreatedinnature?’ Well,significantamountsofdeadleaflitterandwoodfallintothewater,thenastheydecayfurther,theyreleasetanninsthattintthewateratea-stainedbrowncolor.Innature,blackwaterstreamsarefoundinplaceslikeSouthAmericaandAsia,hencewhyfishfromtheseplacessuitablackwateraquarium.  Blackwaterstreamsinthewildareslowmoving,sotomakeyourtankasnaturalaspossible,youmustprovideonlyaslowflowfromyourfilteroutlet.Ifyoufindit’stoostrong,putsomespongeorfilterflossontheoutletpipewhichshoulddisperseandminimizetheflow.Nowthatthere’slessflow,lessdebriswillendupgoingthroughthefiltersoacleanupcrewandgravelvacuumingisneeded!  ButIhearyouask,howdowerecreatethenaturaltanninsreleasedbythenaturalbotanicals?!...well,quitesimply,westillusenature!Youmayusenaturalitemslikeleaves,bark,conesetcbutdon’tgocollectingthingsjustyet,weneedtolearnwhat’ssafetoputinyouraquariumandwhat’snot!  Picturedabove:DriedCatappaleaves WherecanIfindblackwaterbotanicalsthataresafe? Theusualgo-toforgettingblackwaterbotanicalsistosearchthemuponlineandbuyfromthere.YoucanfindmanydifferenttypesofbotanicalsrangingfromCatappaleaves(Indianalmondleaves)tobananaleavestoaldercones,andmoreunusualthingslikeseedpods.Although,haveyoueverthoughtaboutcollectingyourown?! Therearequiteafewbotanicalsthatyoucouldcollectforfreethatareprobablysittingonyourdoorstep(maybeyou’llhavetowalkametreortwobutyougettheidea!). Forexampleoakleavesareperfectafteryouleavethemtodryoutcompletelyforafewweeksormonths(dependingonifyoucollectthemwhenthey’realreadydying/deadornot).Youcanusethemjustlikeyou’duseCatappaleavesinyourtank.They’llreleasetanninsgraduallyovertimeandwillneedtoberemovedoncetheystarttodecompose. You’llneedtomakesurethatyou’renotintroducingpestsortoxinsintoyourtankwhetheryou’rebuyingbotanicalsonlineorcollectingthemyourself.It'sbettertobesafethansorrywhenthingscangodownhillfastinaquariums. Boilingthebotanicalsinapanorevenjustsoakingtheminboiledwaterfromthekettleforafewminutescanmakeallthedifference.Bydoingthis,you’llkillpestsandhopefullyreleaseanyexistingtoxinsinsteadofintroducingthemintoyourtank.However,don’tboilthemfortoolongorelseyou’lllosealotoftanninsinthewaterthatyouwantinyouraquariumtocreatethebeautifultea-stainedeffect.  Picturedabove:aldercones Somebotanicals,likealderconesandseedpods,maygrowbiofilm(fungus-lookinggooeymold)forthefirstfewdaysandmaylastacoupleofweeks.Although,shrimplovetoeatthisandit’snotharmfultothetanksodon’tworryaboutit!Theonlyslightdownsideisthatitdoesn’tlookthatgreat. Butwait!Botanicalsaren’ttheonlydecorativeitemsyoucanhaveinyourblackwaterset-upthatreleasetannins;lotsofwoodsdotoo.Forexample,mopaniwood,bogwoodanddriftwoodallsecretelargeamountsoftanninsintothewater,whichcanbeaneasierandquickerwayoftintingthewater.Butremember,noteverythinginyourtankneedstobeblackwater-style,youcanstilluserocks,differenttypesofwood,anddon’tforgetplants!    HowlongshouldIkeepblackwaterbotanicalsinmyaquarium? Nowthatwe’vesussedhowtopreparebotanicalsfortheaquarium,weneedtounderstandwhentoremovethembecauseunfortunatelytheycan’tstayinthereforever.Differenttypesofbotanicalshavedifferent‘lifespans’. Forexample,Catappaleaveswillcreateabeautifulaestheticforaround2-3weeksandcanlastupto1-2monthsbeforedisintegrating. Althoughyoucanleavetheleavesforthislong,it’sagoodideatoremovethemsoonerthanlaterincasetheycauseammoniabuildupwhendecaying.Ifyouhaveshrimp,orevenfishthatliketomunchonthem,theymaynotlastthislong. Aldercones,anothergreatbotanicalforreleasingtannins,willonlylastaboutamonthuntiltheystarttorotsomakesuretokeepaneyeonthis!    Whatarethebenefitsofusingblackwaterbotanicals? Therearesomanybenefitsoftannins. Theynotonlytintthewater,butalsoprovideantibacterial/antifungalpropertiesandlowerthepHtoproduceslightlyacidicwater.Therefore,botanicals(thenaturalproductsweusetocreatetanninsinourwater),areusedforhospitaltanksaswellasblackwaterbiotopes. Blackwatertankshaveantibacterialpropertiesthathelpmaintainhealthylifeandenhancecolors. Blackwaterbotanicalsarealsousedbysomebreeders/aquaristspurelytolowerthepHofthewaterandtocreateacidicconditionswhichstimulatebreedinginmanyspeciesoffish,andevenshrimp!Youmight,justmight,noticesomefryswimmingaroundandhidingintheplantsifyou’reverylucky.    Whatplantsandlivestockarebestforablackwatertank? Notallplantsaresuitedtolivinginblackwaterconditionsbecausethereisn’tasmuchlightandmoreshadethanmanyplantsprefer. Therefore,avoidplantsthatneedhighlightintensities. Agreatchoiceforblackwatertanksareepiphyteplants(plantsthatattachontowoodandotherdecorations)becausetheydon’trequiremuchlightanddowellinshadedareas.Theseplantsincludejavafern,nymphaeastellata,anubias,andofcourse,bucephalandra.Justremembertoneverburytheirrhizomeinthesubstrateorthey’llrotanddie! Otherplantsthatareagreatchoiceforablackwatertankarecryptocorynes,whichdon’trequirehighlightintensitiesandtherearemanyvarietiesofthem. Also,floatingplantsthatfloatonthesurfaceofthewatertogetthelighttheyneedareperfectforBlackwaterBiotopes!DifferenttypesincludeSalvinias,NajasIndica,andredrootfloaters.Floatingplantslookgreatandsuckoutnitratesfromthewaterwhichcanbearealhelp!    Whatelseisimportanttoknowaboutblackwatertanks? Nowcomesthetechnicalbit;althoughit’seasytoconvertyourtanktoblackwater,youmustbecarefultonotdothistoofastinordertoavoidaffectingthelivestock. Thetannicacid(tannins)andhumicacidsreleasedfromthebotanicalsalsocausethepHtobeloweredandthewatertobecomesofter.Aslongasitdoesn’tplummetrapidlyorfluctuate,thisisfine,butitdoesmeanthatyou’llneedtobetestingyourwaterfrequentlyandadding/removingbotanicalsasyougotokeepitstable. TestthepH&kHatleastonce,ifnottwiceaweekusingliquidtestsasthesearethemostaccurateandefficienttestsandyou’dhopefullynoticesmallchangesbeforetheygetoutofhandandaffectyourlivestock.  Waterchangesareanotherslightlytechnicalfactor. Let’ssayyou’vejustremoved25%ofthewater.Ifyouusede-chlorinatedtapwatertorefillit,thenyouwilldilutethetintquiteabit.Moreimportantly,thewaterparametersareprobablygoingtochange(increaseofpHandwaterhardness,dependingonyourtapwater). First,seehowdifferentthetankwaterconditionsarecomparedtothewateryou’reabouttoadd.Ifthey’reverydifferent,youmayneedtorethinkhowyoudowaterchangesforthattank. Tocombatthisproblem,somepeoplepreparethewaterafewdaysinadvancebyaddingbotanicalsandlettingitsit.Thisway,you’rematchingthewaterparameterstothetankwater,oratleastgettingthemalotclosertoavoidaffectingthelivestock. Also,tohelpreleasethetanninsquicker,youcanputthebotanicalsinboilingwater,waitforittocool,thenaddittoyourtank!(makesuretode-chlorinatethewaterbeforeadding)    Anyway,enoughofthetechnicalstuff,goenjoytheprocessofmakingyourown!
