Airqualitytodayfollowedapatternofworseningconditionsoverthepastfewdays. AccordingtotheEnvironmentalProtectionAdministration(EPA),13weatherstationsflashedaredwarningfor"unhealthy"airqualityinTaoyuanCounty,HsinchuCounty,MiaoliCounty,TaichungCounty,ChanghuaCounty,NantouCounty,andYunlinCounty.Meanwhile,26stationsinChiayiCounty,KaohsiungCity,andPingtungCountyissuedorangealertsforairthatis"unhealthyforsensitivegroups." TheEPAusesasix-colorairpollutionwarningsysteminwhichamaroonalertisthemostsevere,signifying“hazardous”air,followedbypurple,red,orange,yellow,andgreen.AccordingtoEPAstandards,aredalertrunsfrom151to200ontheAirQualityIndex(AQI)scale.AQIlevelsabove150areconsidered“unhealthyforeveryone,”andmembersofsensitivegroupsmayexperienceadverseeffects. AccordingtotheEPA,windsshiftedtotheeasttoday,andconditionstodispersepollutantsinthewesternhalfofthecountrywereabsent.Thismorning,theairqualityfromthenortherntocentralpartsofthecountryrapidlybegantoworsen,with13stationsissuingredalertsby11a.m. PollutedTaipeiskylinetoday.(CNAphoto) Duetoslowwindspeedsandpoorhorizontalandverticalatmosphericdiffusion,conditionsareripefortheaccumulationofpollutants.CoastalareasofTaoyuan,Hsinchu,andMiaoliareallbeingaffectedbya"leewardvortex,"accordingtotheEPA. Meanwhile,photochemicalreactionsintheafternoonalongwithahighozoneconcentrationwillworsenairpollutioninKaohsiungandPingtung.FogisalsolikelyinwesternTaiwanintheevening,affectingvisibility. TheEPApredictsthatonFriday(Feb.26),windswillcontinuetoblowinaneasterlydirection,andwindspeedswillremainslowinthewesternhalfofthecountrywithpooratmosphericdiffusion,resultinginthefurtheraccumulationofpollutants. OnSaturdayandSunday(Feb.27and28),windswillshifttothenorthwest,andairqualityinnorthernandcentralTaiwanshouldimprove,butthesouthwillbemorelikelytoseepoorairquality. ByMonday(March1),theseasonalnortheasternwindswilldissipateandairqualityinwesternTaiwancoulddeteriorateagain.However,onTuesday(March2),thenortheastwindswillstrengthen,likelyimprovingairqualityincentralandnorthernpartsofthecountry,whilesouthernareascouldseemorepollution.
