WhatImeanbythisisyoucanusetheprinciplesofperspectivedrawingforbeginnerstocreateyourownperceptionoftheworldthroughyourart.Youhavethepowerofillusionliterallyatyourfingertips.Youcanalterhowyourartisperceived—allbyjustconqueringthebasicsofperspectivedrawing.Howempoweringisthat? Ifyouarethinking,“OK,thatallsoundsgreat,buthowcanIlearnhowtodrawinperspective?”Well,tostart,let’sgooverafewkeytermsyoushouldknowbeforedelvingintoperspectivedrawingforbeginnerspulledfromthebook,PerspectiveforTheAbsoluteBeginner,byMarkandMaryWillenbrink. LinearPerspectiveTerms Visualdepthisexpressedthroughlinearandatmosphericperspective,aswellascoloruse.Withlinearperspective,depthisachievedthroughlinesandthesizeandplacementofforms.Andthoughcompositionscanvaryincomplexity,thebasictermsanddefinitionscoveredinthissectionareinherenttolinearperspectivedrawings. Thehorizonisthelineforwhichtheskymeetsthelandorwaterbelow.Theheightofthehorizonwillaffecttheplacementofthevanishingpoint(s)aswellasthescene’seyelevel. Thevanishingpointistheplacewhereparallellinesappeartocometogetherinthedistance.Inthepicture,below,youcanseehowtheparallellinesoftheroadrecedeandvisuallymergetocreateasinglevanishingpointonthehorizon.Ascenecanhavealimitlessnumberofvanishingpoints. Thegroundplaneisthehorizontalsurfacebelowthehorizon.Itcouldbelandorwater.Intheimagebelow,thegroundplaneislevel.Ifitwereslopedorhilly,thevanishingpoint–createdbythepath’sparallellines–maynotrestonthehorizonandmayappearasifit’sonaninclinedplane. Theorthogonallinesarelineswhicharedirectedtoavanishingpoint;theparallellinesofrailroadtracks,forexample.Theword“orthogonal”actuallymeansrightangle.Itreferstorightanglesformedbylinessuchasthecornerofacubeshowninperspective. Thevantagepoint,nottobeconfusedwiththevanishingpoint,istheplacefromwhichasceneisviewed.Thevantagepointisaffectedbytheplacementofthehorizonandthevanishingpoints.   One-PointPerspective.Linearperspectivewithjustonevanishingpointisone-pointperspective.Thevanishingpointwilltypicallyappearinthecenterpartofthescene.   Fromthisvantagepoint,youarelookingacrossthegroundplanetothehorizoninthedistance.Theparallellinesoftherailroadtracksconvergeatavanishingpointonthehorizon.Ifthelinesoftheboxweredrawntogobacktothehorizon,theywouldconvergeatthesamevanishingpointastherailroadtracksbecausethelinesoftheboxareparalleltotherailroadtracks.Noticethatallofthelinesinthissceneeitherconvergeatthevanishingpointorarevertical(perpendiculartothegroundplane)orhorizontal(paralleltothehorizon).   Two-PointPerspective.Linearperspectivethatusestwovanishingpointsiscalledtwo-pointperspective. Scenesintwo-pointperspectivetypicallyhavethevanishingpointsplacedatthefarleftandfarright.   Hereisatwo-pointperspectivescenelookingacrossthegroundplanetothehorizoninthedistance.Theparallellinesoftherailroadtracksandboxconvergeatavanishingpointatthefarrightonthehorizon.Theotherlinesoftheboxthatareparallelwiththerailroadtiessharethesamevanishingpointonthefarleft.Allofthelinesofthissceneconvergeateithertheleftorrightvanishingpoint,orareverticallines(perpendiculartothegroundplane).   Multi-PointPerspective.Linearperspectivedoesn’thavetobelimitedtooneortwovanishingpoints.Ascenecouldhavemultiplevanishingpointsdependingonthecomplexityofthesubject.Forexample,three-pointperspectiveissimilartotwo-pointperspective;ithasleftandrightvanishingpointsonthehorizon.Additionally,thereisathirdvanishingpointeitherbeloworabovethehorizon.   Besideshavingvanishingpointsontheleftandright,thisscenehasanadditionalvanishingpointbelowthesubject.Withthisdrawing,thehorizonisabovethesubject,givingabird’s-eyevantagepointtothescene.Everylineofthesubjectisanorthogonallineandgoestooneofthethreevanishingpoints.   Withtwo-pointperspective,theseverticallinesremainstraightupanddownperpendiculartothegroundplane.Withthree-pointperspective,thevantagepointeitherlooksdownorupatthesubject.Insteadofverticallines,ithasathirdsetoforthogonallinesthatconvergeatathirdvanishingpoint.   PetersCartridgeFactory,watercoloronwatercolorpaper,8″by11″.Thevanishingpointsofthisthree-pointperspectivescenecanbelocatedbycontinuingthelinesofthebuildingsandwindowsbeyondtheperimeterofthescenetothreeplacesofconvergence.   AtmosphericPerspective Atmosphericperspective,alsocalledaerialperspective,conveysdepththroughvariationsofvalues(lightsanddarks),colorsandclarityofelements.Foregroundelementsinacompositionhavegreatervaluecontrasts,moreintensecolorsandgreaterdefinitionofdetails.Withdistance,thevaluesandcolorsbecomeneutral,thedetailsarelessdefinedandtheelementstakeonadullblue-grayappearance. Atmosphericperspectiveoccurswhenparticlesintheair,suchaswatervaporandsmog,affectwhatisseen.Formsviewedfromadistancearenotasdefinedandhavelesscontrastbecausetherearemoreparticlesintheatmospherebetweentheformsandtheviewer.Likewise,thewavelengthsofcolorareaffectedbydistance.Bluesbouncearound,whereasthelongercolorwavelengthsarenotaffectedbyparticlesinthesameway.Theresultisthatthebluesremainmorevisiblethantheothercolorsinthespectrum. Thevaluesarethelightsanddarksofacomposition.Intrinsictoatmosphericperspective,valuescaninfluencetheimpressionofdepthinascene.Highlycontrastingvaluestendtoappearforwardofvalueswithlittlecontrast. Thelightingofasceneaffectsshadowsandvaluesofforms.Itcanalsoaffecthowthoseformsareperceived.
