Itsstrengthinthermalshockexposuremakesthematerialsuitableforlaboratoryheatingandcookware.Thischaracteristicallylowthermalexpansionallowsthematerialtomaintainitsintegrity,evenwhentransferredfromacoldregion(suchasarefrigerator)toahotarea(likeanoven)inseconds. Modificationsintheamountofitscomponentsmayincreasethethermalexpansioncoefficientto7.38x10-61/K,butitisstillmuchmoreresistantthanordinarysoda-limeglass. Othervariants–suchasincaseswhereinborosilicateglassisusedascookware–maychangethesilicacompositiontoashighas81%,dependingonitsintendeduse. Themeltingprocessrequiresanexceedinglyhighertemperaturethantraditionalglassproduction,owingtothematerial’shightransitiontemperatureofupto560°C.
