Comparedwiththecommoncold,thesymptomsofinfluenzaareusuallymoresuddenandsevere,anditsrecoverytimeislongerthanthecommoncold,rangingfromaweektoafewweeks.Sometimesitcancausecomplicationssuchaspneumonia,encephalitis,andpericarditisandevenleadtodeath.Influenzavirusalsohasanimportantcharacteristic,thatis,itisveryeasytomutate,andisquiteinfectious.Whentheantigensoftheviruschange,itwillhavetheabilitytohitmostofthepopulation,anddifferentdegreesofmutationwillcauseepidemicsofvaryingscalesinashorttime. Vaccinationsuggestions Theprotectiveeffectofinfluenzavaccinesvariesaccordingtoageorphysicalcondition,with70%-90%protectioninhealthyadultsand50%-60%reductioninhospitalizationduetocomplicationsofinfluenzaintheelderly,and80%reductioninmortality. Inaddition,theprotectiveeffectofthevaccinealsodependsonwhetherthecurrentvaccinestrainsmatchtheactualprevalentvirusstrains,andthegeneralprotectiveeffectwilldecreasewiththeincreaseofthedifferenceofvirustypes.Aftercompletionofinfluenzavaccination,itwilltakeatleasttwoweekstoproduceprotectiveeffect.Fourtosixmonthsfollowingvaccination,theprotectiveeffectofthevaccinemaydecline.Generally,theprotectiveeffectdoesnotexceedoneyear.Therefore,itisrecommendedthatthevaccineshouldbeadministeredonceayear. Currentinfluenzavaccinesaredividedintotrivalentandtetravalentvaccines.Everyyear,thegovernment-sponsoredinfluenzavaccinewillbeupdatedfortheviralstraincompositionaccordingtotheWorldHealthOrganization'sannualrecommendationtotheNorthernHemisphere.Itcontainsthreeinactivatedviruses,namelytwoAviruses(H1N1/H3N2)andoneBviruses.Inadditiontothosethevaccinetargetsatpublicexpense,thegeneralpubliccanalsoconsidervaccinationattheirownexpense. InresponsetotheofteninaccuratepredictionofinfluenzaB:Only47%ofthepredictionsofinfluenzaBinTaiwanfrom2000to2016werecorrect.Atpresent,thereareself-paidtetravalentinfluenzavaccinescoveringtwokindsoftypeAandtypeB(VictoriaandYamagata)onthemarket,providinganotheroptionforcompletepreventionofinfluenza.Intetravalentvaccines,ifthepredictionofinfluenzaBiscorrect,morethan80%oftheprotectionwillbeachieved,whileonly30-40%forpredictionerror. Whoisnotfitforinfluenzavaccination? Thosewhohaveseriousallergiestoeggprotein,thosewhohaveallergiestothecomponentsofvaccines,andthosewhohavehadseriousadversereactionsinthepastwillnotbevaccinated. Isthefluvaccinesafe?Whatarethepossiblesideeffects? Aftervaccination,theremaybepainandrednessattheinjectionsite,whileafewpeoplewillhavemildsystemicreactions,suchasfever,headache,muscleache,nausea,skinitching,urticariaorrubella,whichwillgoawaynaturallywithin1to2daysaftertheoccurrence. Severesideeffects,suchasimmediateanaphylaxisorevenanaphylacticshock,arerare,andwhentheydooccur,symptomsusuallybeginwithinminutestohoursofvaccination.Itissuggestedthatinordertobeabletohavemedicaltreatmentimmediatelyafteranyaccident,recipientstakearestatorneartheinoculationunitaftervaccinationandbeplacedunderobservationforatleast30minutes,andtheycanleaveifnodiscomfortisdetected. Reminders Althoughvaccinationcaneffectivelyreducethechanceofinfectionwithinfluenzavirus,youmaystillsufferfromrespiratoryinfectioncausedbyothernon-influenzaviruses.Pleasepayattentiontopersonalhealthcareandvariouspreventivemeasurestomaintainyourhealth.
