葉劉淑儀專欄：Can、May 和Might的分別

can和may都可解作「有可能」，但can也可表示「有能力」，此時不能與may互通，如﹕「I can swim, but I can't swim well. 」。

May可用以表示「獲允許」，如 ... Menu Searchfor: PublishingDate:2009/12/17 【明報專訊】上周提到，modalauxiliaryverbs（情態助動詞，簡稱modals）用以表達說話者的情態。

其中can、may和might有時候譯成「可以」，但三者所表達的情態各異，使用時須小心區別。

can和may can和may都可解作「有可能」，但can也可表示「有能力」，此時不能與may互通，如﹕「Icanswim,butIcan’tswimwell.」。

May可用以表示「獲允許」，如﹕「MayIcomein?」雖然現代人口語上時有「CanI……?」的說法，可是遠不及「MayI……?」正規和禮貌，所以還是使用may比較穩妥。

以下例子可說明can和may的分別。

如果客人問﹕「CanIsmokeinyourroom?」主人家不高興，可能會這樣答﹕「Youcan,butyoumaynot.」意即「你當然能夠抽煙（如果你有煙和打火機在手），但我不許你這樣做。

」 May還用於表示祝願，通常採用倒裝句法（inversion），如﹕ Longmayyouprosper.（祝你永享昌盛。

） Mayyoulivehappilyeverafter.（祝你今後生活幸福愉快。

） might和may 正如could和can，might不只是may的過去式，以下是其中幾個用法﹕ 1.描述過去的事情 IbroughtanumbrellabecauseIthoughtitmightrain. 此外，若描述過去可能發生卻沒有發生的事情，應該用mighthave而非mayhave，例如﹕ IfIhadtakenthevaccineinjection,Imighthaveavoidedhavingtheflu.（如果我接受了疫苗注射，就可能避免染上感冒，而非「一定」可避免，因此該用mighthave而非wouldhave。

） 2.表示較小的可能（通常帶有較多的條件限制）： 問﹕AreyoucomingtovisitmeinSanFranciscothissummer? 答﹕Imightbeabletodoso. 表示答話者並不肯定真的能到三藩市探望朋友。

may則用於較可能發生的情﹕Imaygoshoppingthisweekend. 3.請求允許時，用MightI比用MayI更客氣。

（至於表示祝願時，則只會用may，不會用might。

）其他情態助動詞，如will和would、shall和should，也有很微妙的差別，將來有機會再談。
