Afteranimpressivehome-and-awayseason,includingaseven-matchunbeatenstreakduringNovemberandDecember2003,AdelaideUnitedreachedtheNSLpreliminaryfinal,losingtoPerthGlory.TheNSLcametoanendatthecompletionofthe2003–04seasonafter28seasonswithTheRedsonlycompetinginthefinalseasonasgoverningbodyAustralianSoccerAssociation(laterFootballFederationAustralia)shutdowntheleagueinpreparationforthelaunchofthefullyprofessionalA-Leaguealmost12monthslater,on26August2005. 2005–2010:MiamiFCrelationship[edit] AdelaideUnitedwereannouncedasoneofeightteamstocompeteinthefirstseasonoftheA-League,andare,alongwiththePerthGloryandNewcastleJets,oneofonlythreeteamstosurvivefromtheNationalSoccerLeague'slastseason.Unitedbeganpreparationearlierthanmostoftheotherclubsandhadannouncedtwothirdsofthe20mansquadbeforeFebruary2005. TheclubfocusedonbringingseveralAdelaidebornplayersbacktoSouthAustralia,suchasAngeloCostanzo,TravisDoddandLucasPantelis,whohadpreviouslyplayedforAdelaideCitySCintheNSL.ShengqingQuwassignedfromChineseclubShanghaiShenhuaastheclubs"marquee"signing(arulingallowingeachcluboneplayertobepaidoutsidethesalarycap)inMarch2005. ContinuingtheirgoodformfromthefinalseasonoftheNSL,AdelaideUnitedfinishedasPremiersintheinauguralseasonoftheHyundaiA-League.TheRedswerebundledoutofthefinalsraceinstraightsetslosingtoSydneyFCinthetwolegsemifinalandthenCentralCoastMariners1–0inthepreliminaryfinalatHindmarsh. AdelaidecompetedintheACLChampionsLeaguein2010afterfinishingsecondonthe2008–09A-Leagueleaguetable,andrunner-upintheFinalsseriestocross-borderrivals,MelbourneVictory.[18]AdelaideweredrawnintoGroupHalongside2009AsianChampionsPohangSteelers,ChinesesisterclubShandongLunengandSanfrecceHiroshima.AdelaideUnitedmanagedtoholdontotopspotofGroupHresultinginahomematchintheRoundof16.Inanexciting,nerve-rackingmatch,AdelaidelosttoJeonbukMotors3–2.Adelaidecamebacktwiceinthegame,includingagoalinthefinalsecondsofthematch.Jeonbukwonthematchwithagoalinthesecondhalfofextratime.[19] 2010–2018:Bottomtotop[edit] Forthefirsttimeintheclub'shistory,theAdelaideUnitedwasledbyaninternationalmanagerinRiniCoolen,[20]movingawayfromtheAdelaideUnitedtraditionoflocalcoachesseeninitspriorseasons. Asof9September2010,AdelaideUnitedhadmadeAustraliansoccerhistorybybecomingthefirstteamtoclimbfromthebottomofthetabletothetop,whilstthe2009–10premiersandchampions,SydneyFC,remainedrootedatthebottom.[21]AdelaideUnitedalsoclaimedtherecordforlongestundefeatedstreakinA-LeaguehistorywiththeirwinoverWellingtonPhoenixinWeek11oftheleague,consistingofthirteengamesstretchingbacktothepenultimateroundofthe2009–10A-Leagueseason.ThissurpassedCentralCoastMariners'spreviousrecordoftwelvegamesundefeatedsetbackinthe2005–06A-Leagueseason.UnfortunatelyforAdelaideUnited,BrisbaneRoarsurpassedthisnewlysetrecord,whentheRoarcomprehensivelywontheirWeek16fixtureagainstCentralCoastMarinersatBluetongueStadium. Following18monthsunderFootballFederationAustralia(FFA)financialadministration,itwasannouncedon8November2010thataSouthAustralianconsortiumhadtakenoverownershipoftheclubwithaten-yearlicence.Newco-ownerGregGriffinstepsinasChairmanoftheclubreplacingMelPatzwald,whilstex-NorthAdelaideFootballClubCEO,GlennElliottreplacesSamCiccarello,whonowtakesuparoleattheFFA.[22][23][24] On9January2011,AdelaidebrokeitslongestwinlessstreakagainstitsrivalclubMelbourneVictorybypostinga4–1awaywininMelbourneatAAMIPark.AdelaideUnitedthenwentontomakeA-Leaguehistorybyrecordingthehighestwinningmarginintheleague'shistorywithan8–1winoverNorthQueenslandFuryon21January2011.Thisalsomarkedthefirsttimetwoplayersfromthesamesidescoredhat-tricksinonegame(SergiovanDijkandMarcosFlores),andmatchedtheall-timehighestmatchaggregatescoreof9goalsscoredinonematch. Adelaidefinishedtheseasonbywinning2–1atAdelaideOvalagainstMelbourneVictoryinfrontof21,038spectators –theclub'slargestcrowdoftheseason.Thisensuredtheclubthirdplaceinoverallstandingsattheendoftheseason,andhostingrightsforatleastthefirstweekoftheknock-outFinalsSeries.AdelaideUnitedwentontodefeatWellingtonPhoenixinthefirstweekoftheFinalsundertorrentialrain,butsuccumbedtoGoldCoastUnitedinthesecondweekandwereknockedoutofthecompetitiononthebackofa2–3homeloss. On18December2011itwasannouncedthatheadcoachRiniCoolenhadbeensackedandreplacedbyformercoachJohnKosminaascaretakercoachfortherestoftheseason,includingtheAFCChampionsLeaguegroupstageof2012.[25]AspartofKosmina'stakeoveroftheheadcoachingposition,EugeneGalekovićwasnamedclubcaptainon28December2011,replacingJonMcKain.[26] Theirfourthappearanceinthecompetition –moretimesthananyotherAustralianclub –Adelaidequalifiedforthe2012AFCChampionsLeagueplayoffroundbyfinishingthirdinthe2010–11A-League.TheywereplacedinGroupE,quicklydubbedthe'GroupofDeath'bynumerouscommentators,alongsideBunyodkor,GambaOsakaandPohangSteelers.AdelaidequalifiedthroughtotheRoundof16forathirdtimeandthenwentontoqualifyforthequarterfinalswitha1–0winathomeagainstNagoyaGrampus. AdelaidefacedBunyodkorinthequarter-finals.Adelaidesurrendereda2–0leadathome,withBunyodkorclawingbacktoend2–2.ThereturnleginTashkentwasagainlockedat2–2after90minutesofplay,requiringthegametogotoextratimeandpossiblepenaltiesthereafter.DespiteanIainRamsaygoalinthethirdminutetogiveAdelaidethelead,BunyodkoreventuallyeliminatedAdelaidebyscoringinaddedextratime.Adelaideendedthematchwithninemen,havingIainFyfeandFabianBarbierobothsentoffafterreceivingtwoyellowcards.
