Ozoneisagasyou’veprobablyheardofasalayerhighupinEarth’satmosphere.Thisozonelayerisagoodthing—ithelpsblockusfromtheSun’sharmfulradiation.However,groundlevelozoneisbadforhumanhealth.Itiscreatedwhensunlightreactswithcertainchemicalemissions(forexamplenitrogendioxide,carbonmonoxideandmethane).Thesechemicalscancomefromindustrialfacilities,carexhaust,gasolinevaporsandothersources. Airborneparticlesaresolidandliquiddropletssuspendedintheair.Theseparticlesbecomeairborneatconstructionsites,smokestacks,carexhaustpipes,wildfires,volcanoesandmanyotherplaces,too.Theparticlescanalsobeformedfromchemicalreactionsintheatmosphere. GOES-RSeriessatellitescanprovideparticlepollutionmeasurementsapproximatelyeveryfiveminutesduringtheday.JPSSsatellitescanprovideahigherresolutionmeasurementofaerosolsovertheentireplanetonceaday.JPSScanalsoobservethemovementofaerosolsfromonesideoftheplanettotheother.JPSScanalsomeasurecarbonmonoxidewhichisassociatedwithpoorairqualityresultingfromwildfires.
