IntheProseEddabookGylfaginning,variousreferencesaremadetoRagnarök.Ragnarökisfirstmentionedinchapter26,wherethethronedfigureofHigh,kingofthehall,tellsGangleri(KingGylfiindisguise)somebasicinformationaboutthegoddessIðunn,includingthatherappleswillkeepthegodsyounguntilRagnarök.[30] HighrelatesthattheÆsirandtheEinherjardressforwarandheadtothefield.Odin,wearingagoldhelmetandanintricatecoatofmail,carrieshisspearGungnirandridesbeforethem.OdinadvancesagainstFenrir,whileThormovesathisside,thoughThorisunabletoassistOdinbecausehehasengagedJörmungandrincombat.AccordingtoHigh,FreyrfightsfiercelywithSurtr,butfallsbecausehelackstheswordheoncegavetohismessenger,Skírnir.ThehoundGarmr(describedhereasthe"worstofmonsters")breaksfreefromhisbondsinfrontofGnipahellir,andfightsthegodTýr,resultinginbothoftheirdeaths.[35]
