Colorjetprintingusesinkjettechnologytodepositaliquidbinderacrossabedofpowder.Powderisreleasedandspreadwitharollertoformeachnewlayer.ThistechnologywasoriginallydevelopedbyZCorporation.[24] Fuseddepositionmodelingishandledby3DSystems'hobbyistlevelprinterline.Theseprintersuseaheatedextrudertodepositathermoplasticalongcomplextoolpaths,onelayeratatime.Agoodvisualmodelofthisisusingahotglueguntobuilda3dmodel.Thehotgluegun(ahandpoweredextruder)wouldhavetobuildthingsonelayeratatime,depositingastringroughlythewidthoftheextruderorifice.Oncealayerhascooledandhardened,thenextlayercanbebuiltuntilthemodeliscomplete.FDMlimitationsincludetime(itmusttravelalongcomplextoolpaths),color(onlyonecolorcanbeprintedatatime),anddurability(inter-layeradhesionisanalogoustoacoldsolder).Thisisgenerallytheleastexpensivetypeofprinteravailable. Multi-Jetprintingreferstotheprocessofdepositingliquidphotopolymersontoabuildsurfaceusinginkjettechnology.Highresolutionisattainablewithasupportmaterialthatcanbeeasilyremovedinpostprocessing.UnlikeFDM,thesepartsaregenerallytoobrittleforsnap-fits.However,lowerdurometer(softer)partsarepossiblewithnewermodelMJPprinters.Thisallowstheusertocreaterubberyorhardplasticpartsformorediverseapplications. DirectMetalSinteringreferstothe3DSystemsmetalprintingprocess.Thisprocessspreadsfinepowdersofdiversemetalalloysoutontoaprintbed,andfusesgeometriestogetherusinganoverheadlaserbeam.Thistechnologyisusedprimarilyinmedicalandaerospaceapplications,wherelowvolumesofuniqueandcomplexmodelsareneeded.
