The WHO air quality guidelines offer guidance to policy-makers on reducing the effects on health of air pollution. Morethanhalfofthisdiseaseburdenisbornebythepopulationsofdeveloping countries.ThisupdateoftheWHOairqualityguidelineshasbeendeveloped inresponsetothisrealandglobalthreattopublichealth.Itcontinuesthelong WHOtraditionofsupportingitsMemberStateswiththebestavailableevidence onhealthdeterminants,andontherisksofairpollutioninparticular.Previous editionsoftheguidelinesfoundwideapplicationinenvironmentalandpublic healthdecision-makinginvariouspartsoftheworld. Althoughtheseguidelinesareneitherstandardsnorlegallybindingcriteria, theyaredesignedtoofferguidanceinreducingthehealthimpactsofairpollutionbasedonexpertevaluationofcurrentscientificevidence.Theyareintended toberelevanttothediverseconditionsofallWHO’sregionsandtosupporta broadrangeofpolicyoptionsforairqualitymanagement.Knowledgeaboutthe hazardouspropertiesofthepollutantsandindicationoftheriskrelatedtoexposure,summarizedbytheguidelines,provideanessentialscientificcontribution tothedevelopmentofstrategiesforairqualitymanagement.Authoritiespreparingnationalstrategies,especiallyinthosecountriesthatlackthenecessaryscientificinfrastructureandresourcestoconducttheirownassessmentsinsupportof publicpolicy,willfindtheguidelinesanessentialresource. Thesynthesisoftheresearchresultsthatunderlietheguidelineshasbeenconductedbyoutstandingscientistsandwassubjecttoscrupulouspeerreview.We aregratefultotheseexpertsfortheireffortsandbelievethatthisworkwillcontributetoimprovingthehealthofpeopleinallregionsoftheworld.
