非洲象又分二類：森林型非洲象，體色較深，體型較小；草原型非洲象，體色較淡，體型較大。

大象用趾尖走路，後跟有肉墊，以支撐龐大的體重。

牠們皮厚，毛少，容易生皮膚病，所以經常洗澡或做泥浴。

牠們也會揚起塵土，或在地上打滾，以土覆身去除皮膚上的寄生蟲。

長鼻用來摘取食物、汲水喝或搬運物品。

象一生中會磨損掉上下頜每邊各6顆臼齒，當最後一副牙齒(第6顆)磨損掉，長不出新牙，嚼不動食物時，即面臨死亡。

象是母系社會，由年長的母象帶領象群，領隊必須決定尋覓食物的路程。

由於非洲象是象牙主要來源，因此遭到人類大量獵殺，自1989年起，非洲象已列為瀕危野生動物。
