Cogmed is a cognitive training software program created in the lab of Torkel Klingberg, a neuroscientist at the Karolinska Institute. Cogmed'sinitialmarketingwasfocusedonhelpingpeoplewithattentiondeficithyperactivitydisorderandexpandedtootherimpairmentsofworkingmemory,suchaspersonswithlearningdisabilities,andpeoplewhohadastrokeorothertraumaticbraininjury.[1][3][4] In2010,CogmedwaspurchasedbyPearsonEducationandbecameapartofthePearsonClinicalAssessmentGroup.[5][6]Karolinskareceived22mSEKanddouble-digitroyaltiesaspartofthetransaction.[7]In2019,Cogmedwastransferredbacktotheoriginalfounders.[8] A2012meta-analysisof23researchstudiesonsevendifferentcommercialandnon-commercialworkingmemorytrainingtechniques(includingCogmed)foundthat"workingmemorytrainingprogramsgiveonlynear-transfereffects,andthereisnoconvincingevidencethatevensuchnear-transfereffectsaredurable."[9]Another2012reviewofCogmedfoundthatmanyoftheproblem-solvingortrainingtaskspresentedinCogmedarenotrelatedtoworkingmemory,thatmanyoftheattentiontasksareunrelatedtoADHD,andthatthereislimitedtransfertoreal-lifemanifestationsofattentiondeficits,concluding"TheonlyunequivocalstatementthatcanbemadeisthatCogmedwillimproveperformanceontasksthatresembleCogmedtraining."[10] Intheyearsfollowing,severalindependentresearchgroupshavepublishedstudiessupportingtheoriginalfindings,andshowingthatCogmedimprovesworkingmemoryandattentioninchildrenwithADHD,[11][12]childrenpostcancertreatment,[13][14][15]andstrokepatients.[16][17] ThelargestCogmedstudytodate(arandomized,controlledtrialbyindependentresearchers,includingcloseto600typicallydevelopingchildren)foundthatCogmedtrainingledtoimprovementsin“geometryskills,readingskills,Raven’sfluidIQmeasure,theabilitytoinhibitprepotentimpulsesandself-regulationabilities”.[18]Thestudyalsofoundthat,“3–4yearsaftertheintervention,thechildrenwhoreceivedtraining[had]aroughly16percentagepointshigherprobabilityofenteringtheacademictrackinsecondaryschool”.[18]
