Manychildrenhavegoodmemoriesforevents,whichmayhavehappened,orpeopletheymetalongtimeagobutmayhavedifficultiesinrememberingthedetailsofwhattheyhaveheardorseenmomentsbefore.Itisanimportantskillasithelpsthechildtoretainwordslongenoughinyourheadforthechildtobeabletocarryoutaninstructionaccurately.Thisdifficultywithshort-termauditorymemoryiscommoninchildrenwithlanguagedifficulties. Memoryimpactsaperson’sabilitytoperformalmostanyactivity.Memoryishow“knowledgeisencoded,stored,andlaterretrieved”(Kandell,Schwartz,andJessell,2000).Evenmildmemorydeficitscanimpactastudent’ssuccess.Therearedifferentkindsofmemory,includinglong-termmemory,short-termmemory,workingmemory,auditorymemory,andvisualmemory. Auditorymemoryistheabilitytotakeininformationthatispresentedorally(outloud),processit,retainitinone’smind,andthenrecallit.Auditorymemoryrequiresworkingmemory. Workingmemoryis“themanagement,manipulation,andtransformationofinformationdrawnfromshort-termmemoryandlong-termmemory”(Dehn,2008).Workingmemoryisresponsibleforprocessinghigher-levellinguisticinformation,andifthetaskismorecomplex,workingmemoryspendsmoretimeprocessing(DanemanandCarpenter,1980).Workingmemorycapacityhassignificantrelationshipswithreadingdecoding,languagecomprehension,spelling,followingdirections,vocabularydevelopment,notetaking,andGPA. Sub-skillsofauditorycomprehensionthatwewouldbeexpectingourchildrentodevelop.Considertheseforamoment: developingmemoryandconceptforasingleword showingunderstandingoflearn-to-listensounds respondingappropriatelytocommonexpressions followingsimpledirections answeringcommonquestions completingaknownlinguisticmessageusingauditoryclosure sequencingtwo,threeandfourcriticalelementsinamessage identifyingapicturerelatedtoastory answeringcommonquestionsaboutafamiliartopicorstory integratingnewinformationaboutatopicwithexistinginformation. Achildwhoispooratrunningwillimprovewithpractice;inthesamewayachildcandeveloptheirshort-termauditorymemory.Auditorymemorydeficitsrememberingmulti-stepdirections,relatingnewinformationtopriorknowledge,orallanguagecomprehension,takingnoteswhilelistening,verbalfluidreasoning,writtenexpression,andoralexpression(Dehn,2008).Individualswithdeficitsandweaknessescanbenefitfromdirectteachingofstrategies,whichcanimproveworkingmemoryperformance. Effectivestrategyteachingcaninclude: Language Engaginginone-on-onebrief,focusedsessionsoverseveralweeks; Limitamountofverbalinstructionatanyonetime–Chunkintosmaller,simplephrases Repeatindividuallyanyinformationorinstructionsgiventothewholeclass Pause,Repeat,Check–askchildtorepeatbackorclarify Rehearsal–helpchildachievesilentrehearsalbywhisperinginformationtothemselvesmoreandmoresoftlyuntiltheycandoitsilently Encouragechildtotakedailymessages Teachingonestrategyatatime; Providingplentyofpracticeandofferingfeedback; Pausingbeforeauditoryinputisgivenallowsthechildtoattendmoreclosely; Teachgrammarspecificallythroughmeaningfulcontextsandinpracticalsituations Teachgrammarvisually.Usepictures,concreteobjects,Rebussymbols,signsorgesturesandthewrittenword Makelearningvisual Accompanykeywordsandchecklistswithpictures,icons,andsymbols Developyourowndiagramsoriconsforkeywordsandsubject-specificwords Usekeywords,iconsanddiagramsratherthanfulltext Underlineandhighlightkeywords Makeuseofwordtrees,mapsorwebs NewLearning Makeuseoftheproceduralmemorybyrole-play,drama,andphysicalmovement Provideplentyofpracticewhenteachingroutines,keyproceduresandsequences Makeuseofroutinestohelplearning Association–helpchildlinkinformationwithamorefamiliarword,picture,ideaorimage Provideregularover-learningopportunitiestorecallinformation,evenafteryouthinkthechildhaslearnedit Providingpositivereinforcementanddatatracking; Explainingpurposeandrationale; Explainingandmodelingthestepsofthestrategy; Teachingcuestohelprememberthestrategy; Encouragingchildrentomonitorandevaluatestrategyuse; Encouraginggeneralizationacrosssessions Contactmeformoreinformationorfurtherguidanceonindividualswithpoormemoryskillsandhowinterventioncanhelp.
