Thesecondpanelshowstheforecastofparticles(PManddesertdust)forCupertino.Atmosphericparticulatematter(PM)aremicroscopicsolidorliquidmattersuspendedintheair.Sourcesofparticulatemattercanbenaturaloranthropogenic.Ofgreatestconcernto publichealtharetheparticlessmallenoughtobeinhaledintothedeepestpartsofthelung.Theseparticlesarelessthan 10 micronsindiameter(approximately1/7ththethicknessoftheahumanhair)andaredefinedasPM10.Theyareamixtureofmaterialsthatcanincludesmoke,soot,dust,salt,acids,andmetals.Particulatematteralsoformswhen gasesemittedfrommotorvehiclesandindustryundergochemicalreactionsintheatmosphere.PM10isvisiblebyeyeasthehazethatwethinkofassmog.PM10areamongthemostharmfulofallairpollutants. PM10canincreasethe numberandseverityofasthmaattacksPM10causesoraggravatebronchitisandotherlungdiseasesPM10reducesthebody'sabilitytofightinfections PM10includesfine particulatematterdefinedasPM2.5,whicharefineparticleswithadiameterof2.5 μmorless.Thebiggestimpactofparticulateairpollutiononpublichealthisunderstoodtobefromlong-termexposuretoPM2.5:PM2.5increasestheage-specificmortalityrisk,particularlyfromcardiovascularcauses.DesertDustconsistsofparticlessmallerthan62μmoriginatingindeserts.Often,thedustparticlesaresmall,leadingtohighconcentrationsofPM10andPM2.5andallrelatedhealthimpacts. Forecastsofconcentrationsofairpollutiongasesarepresentedinthethirdpanel.Ozone(O₃)pollutioninthelowertroposphereiscausedmainlyinurbanareas.Ozonecan:MakeitmoredifficulttobreathedeeplyandvigorouslyCauseshortnessofbreath,andpainwhentakingadeepbreathCausecoughingandsoreorscratchythroatInflameanddamagethebreathingairwaysAggravatelungdiseasessuchasasthma,emphysema,andchronicbronchitisIncreasethefrequencyofasthmaattacksMakethelungsmoresusceptibletoinfectionContinuetodamagethelungsevenwhenthesymptomshavedisappearedCausechronicobstructivepulmonarydisease(COPD)Sulfurdioxide(SO₂)isagas,whichisinvisibleandhasanasty,sharpsmell.Itreactseasilywithothersubstancestoformharmfulcompounds,suchassulfuricacid,sulfurousacidandsulfateparticles.Short-termexposurestoSO₂canharmthehumanrespiratorysystemandmakebreathingdifficult.SO₂andothersulfuroxidescancontributetoacidrain,whichcanharmsensitiveecosystems.Children,theelderly,andthosewhosufferfromasthmaareparticularlysensitivetoeffectsofSO₂.Nitrogendioxide(NO₂)isareddish-browngasthathasacharacteristicsharp,bitingodorandisaprominentairpollutant. Themajorsourceofnitrogendioxideistheburningoffossilfuels:coal,oilandgas.Mostofthenitrogendioxideincitiescomesfrommotorvehicleexhaust.Nitrogendioxideisanimportantairpollutantbecauseitcontributestotheformationofozone,whichcanhavesignificantimpactsonhumanhealth. NO₂inflamestheliningofthelungs,anditcanreduceimmunitytolunginfections NO₂causesproblemssuchaswheezing,coughing,colds,fluandbronchitis ForEurope,theairpollutionmeteogramhasafourthpanel,showingthepollenforecastforCupertino. Grasspollenaretheprimarytriggerofpollenallergiesduringthesummermonths.Theycausesomeofthemostsevereanddifficult-to-treatsymptoms.Inhumidclimates,thegrasspollenseasonlastsseveralmonths.Indrierclimatesthegrasspollenseasonissignificantlyshorter,asarethebirchandolivepollenseason. Precipitationcancleantheairfrompollen,butifitisassociatedwiththunderstorms,thestrongwindsinitiallyincreasethepollenconcentration.
