InterestinChuhasincreasedsteadilysincethelate1980s.Severalcollectionsofhispreviouslyunpublishedwritinghaveappearedinrecentyears,andin2015thefirstbiographyofhimwaspublishedinHongKong.Chu'sbraveryin'speakingtruthtopower',theintriguesurroundinghisdeath,andthefactthatheremainsoneofasmallnumberof'Rightists'tohaveneverbeenrehabilitatedafterMao'sdeath,hasmeantthatmanystudiesabouthimhavebeenundulyhagiographic—orinthecaseoftherecentbiography,revisionisttothepointofdenyingChu'ssincerityasaliberalcritic. Bycontrast,ChuhasbeengivenonlypassingattentioninAnglophonehistories.LateQingandMayFourthliberalslikeLiangQichao梁啟超andHuShih胡適arewellknown,whilethosewhosomehavedubbedChina's'thirdgeneration'ofliberals—includingChu,LuoLongji羅隆基,andQuentinPan潘光旦—continuetobemisunderstood.SandwichedbetweenthewarringKMTandCommunists,'thirdway'liberalsareseentohave'failed'intheirgoalofcreatinganopen,criticalforumforadvisingthegovernmentandaddressingthepublic.TheensuingColdWarensuredthattheirefforts,alongwithmanynuancesof1940sChinesehistory,slidintoobscurity. Thisthesisaimstoprovideaclearerunderstandingofliberaldiscoursein1940sChina,aspropoundedbyChuandhiscolleaguesatTheObserver,butalsointhewritingofotherself-described'liberalintellectuals'自由主義知識分子ofthetime.WilliamSima’scontentionisthatwhileChuisrememberedasaneditorofChina'sleadingliberaljournalofthecivilwar,otherwriterstoodeserveattention—manyinTheObservergroup觀察社,forinstance,hadbeenprofessorsattheSouthwestAssociatedUniversity西南聯合大學inKuming,duringthewarwithJapan.HisworkwillengagewidelywiththeliberalimpulseinmodernChineseintellectualhistory,theroleoftheintellectualinChinesesociety,andshowwhysuchaspectsof'China'sunfinishedtwentiethcentury'arestillimportanttoday.
