原產於地中海地區，分佈區域從摩洛哥和葡萄牙向北至法國南部，東至土耳其和敘利亞。

[1][2]金魚草因花狀似金魚而得名，其拉丁學名「Antirrhinum」意指「狀如鼻子」，而「majus」則意為「五月開花」。

形態金魚草為多年生草本植物，植株挺拔，株高0.5-1m，最高可至2m。

葉上部成螺旋狀互生，披針形，基部對生，長1-7厘米，寬2-2.5厘米。

花桅頂生總狀花序，每朵花長3.5-4.5厘米，二唇形左右對稱。

野生植物有粉紅色到紫色的花色，二唇往往為黃色，莖色與花色亦有相關性。

花期很長，3-6月。

果實為蒴果卵圓形，直徑10-14毫米，其中含有大量種子。

物種各分佈區域均有分佈。

生態習性金魚草性喜涼爽氣候，忌高溫及高濕，耐寒性較好。

喜全光，稍耐半蔭。

喜疏鬆、肥沃、排水良好的土壤，對鹼性土壤稍有耐性。

金魚草有自播繁衍能力。

栽培應用金魚草的反整齊花品種金魚草因其花色鮮艷、花形奇特，普遍栽植於花園、花壇和花鏡等處，亦可用於切花生產。

雖然金魚草是多年生植物，但經常會作為一年生或二年生植物栽培，尤其是在其無法過冬的寒冷地區。

金魚草已有大量的栽培品種，花色除藍色外，其餘紫、橙、粉、黃、白及複色均有。

株型高中矮均有，亦有花型巨大的四倍體和雜種一代，此外，還有具反整齊花的品種，其花序上只着生有一朵整齊的大花。

[3][4] 金魚草很容易由栽培品種野化，並在世界各氣候溫和的區域廣泛地被馴化。

[2][3]園林栽培應用以播種為主，亦可扦插或組織培養繁殖。

此外，金魚草全株亦可入藥，具有清熱解毒、涼血消腫之功效。

金魚草也是在植物遺傳學研究中的重要模式生物。

[5]例如其含有的基因DEFICIENS就代表着首字母縮寫詞MADS盒基因家族中的「D」，對研究植物的演化發展起着重要的作用。

此外，金魚草在建立花器官發育的ABC模型中也起到了重要作用。
