SimpleRightandLeftHanded-Layups Thelay-upistheeasiestshotandthefirstshotyoushouldlearn.It'snotaseasyasitlooksatfirst,assomekidshavedifficultygettingthecorrectfootwork,andshootingoffthecorrectfoot.Youmustalsolearntouseeitherhand. Footwork Whendribblingtowardthebasket,moveslightlytoonesideofthehooptocreatetheproperangle.Ifyou'reontherightside,dribbleright-handed,andplantyourleft(inside)footandjumpoffthatfoot,andfinallyshootwithyourrighthand. Asyouraiseyourrighthand,yourrightkneeshouldalsoelevate.Pretendthereisastringattachedtoyourrighthandandyourrightknee.Reversethisformifshootingfromtheleftside. Asyouapproachthehoop,takeahalfstepwithyouroutsidefoot,thentakeafullstridewithyourinsidefootpushingoffthecourt.Whenjumping,youroutsidekneeshouldbebent.Godirectlytowardthebasket,withyourheadupandeyesfocusedonthebackboard.Goupstrongandstraighttothehoop.Don'tshyawayifthereisadefender,justgostrongtothehoop.Youmaygetfouledandgetathreepointchance. Aim Usethebackboardwhenshootinglay-upsfromeitherside.Aimforthetopcorneroftheboxonthebackboard.Focusonthisarea;don'twatchtheball.Keepyourheadup. ThePushRelease Youngerplayerswhoarenotyetstrongenoughfortheunderhandreleaseshouldusethepushrelease.Releasetheballwiththebackofyourhandsfacingyou.Extendyourshootingarm,asyoupushtheballtothehoopoffyourfingertips.Youshouldgoupwithtwohands,thenreleasetheballwithyouroutsidehand.Averyyoungplayermayneedtoshoottheballwithtwohands. UnderhandRelease Asyougetstronger,youshoulddeveloptheunderhandshot.Thisreleaseresultsinasoftershot,andmorecontrolwhenyouaremovingathighspeed.Releasetheballwithyourpalmupandarmextended.Lettheballrolloffyourpalmandthenyourfingertips,andlaytheballsoftlyoffthebackboard.Usetwohandsgoingup,butthenreleasetheballwithyouroutsidehandatthetopofyourjump.Bestrongandconcentrate-"finish"! Right-handedlay-up Left-handedlay-up Simpledrillforteachingthefootwork Havetheplayersgetintoalineneartherightsideofthebasket(toshoottheright-handedlay-up).Eachplayertakesaturn.Youcanusemorethanonebasketifyouhaveenoughassistantstowatcheachplayer'stechnique.Thisdrillworksoncorrectfootwork. Havetheplayer(withaball)facetherightsideofthebackboardwithbothfeettogether.Thenhavehertakeonestepforwardwiththeinside(left)foot,plantthatfootandjumpoffofitandshoottheright-handedlay-up.Whenjumping,therightthighcomesupwiththekneebent.Haveeachplayerworkonthistechnique. Thentryitontherun(withoutdribbling),andthenwithdribbling.Dotheleftsidealso-onthissideyoustepforwardandplanttheright(inside)foot,andraisetheleftthighandleg. ReverseLay-ups Thereverselay-upisanotherimportantfundamental.Therearetwotypes,the(1)outsidehandreverselay-up,andthe(2)insidehandreverselay-up.Withthereverselay-up,youfinishtheshotontheoppositesideofthebasketfromwhereyoustarted.So,ifyoudribbleinfromtherightwingorcorner,youactuallygobeyondthehoopandlay-upitupfromtheleftsideofthehoop. Andfromtheleftwingorcorner,youshoottheballfromtherightsideofthehoop,usingtherightcornerofthebackboard.Byusingthistechniqueyoucanpreventtheshotfrombeingblockedbykeepingyourbacktothedefenderwhenyoushoot,andbyusingthebasketitselfasashieldfromthedefender. Thefootworkfortheoutsidehandreverselay-upgoeslikethis.Ifyouarecominginfromtherightside,youwillessentiallybeshootingaleft-handedlay-upontheleftsideusingthesamefootworkyouwoulduseforanyleft-handedlay-up-plantandjumpoffyourrightfoot(insidefoot)andyourleftkneeandlegcomeup. Cominginfromtheleftwing,yougounder(beyond)thehoopandshootaright-handedlay-upusingthestandardfootworkforaright-handedlay-up(plantandjumpofftheleft,insidefoot,rightlegcomesup). Thistakessomepractice.Youhavetolearntohaveanawarenessofwhereyouareunderthebasket.Youdon'twanttogetcaughtshortwhereyoucan'treachtheoppositesideoftherim.Gettheballhighupontheglass-manymissescomeupshort.Youwillneedtolearnhowtospintheballoffthebackboard,andbeabletodoitwhenyoudrawcontactandgetbumpedinside.Coacheslovethe"and-1",amadelay-upfollowedbyafree-throw. Ontheinsidehandreverselay-up,youplanttheoutsidefoot,angleyourbody45degreesfromthebackboard,andreleasetheballwiththeinsidehandhighoffthebackboard.Sowhenapproachingfromtherightside,plantyourleftfoot,andreleasetheballwiththerighthand.Thisshotisharderforthedefendertoblock. Whendoinglay-updrills,addsomerepsofreverselay-upsfrombothsides. Reverselay-upsfromBallerBootCamp.com(bothstandardandinsidehandreverselay-ups): InsideHandLay-up Theinsidehandlay-upcanbeusedwhenyousensethatthedefenderistryingtoblockyourlay-up.Usetheinsidehand(lefthandontherightside,andrighthandontheleftside),andlayitinunderthedefender'sarm.Thisisamoreadvancedlevelmove,butagreatonetoaddtoyouransenal,especiallywhenashotblockerischasingyouonabreak-awaylay-up. Whenapproachingthebasket,insteadofplantingtheinsidefoot(leftfootforright-handedlay-up),youplanttheoutsiderightfootwhileextendingtheinsidelefthandforwardtolaytheballofftheglass. Inside-handlay-upfromCoachJoeWoottenatCoachWootten'sBasketballCamp: "ProHop"finish Thistimeimagineyouareapproachingthehoopatfullspeedandthereisadefenderalreadytherewaitingforyou.Usetheprohop.Dribbleatthedefender,thensuddenlystopandhopsideways(ifthedefenderstaysback)andjump-stopinthepaintforthepull-upjumper.Ifthedefenderinitiallymovesouttowardyou,theninsteadofhoppingsideways,hopstraightpasthim/hertowardthehoopforeitherashortjumper,oralay-up.Veryimportantly,whenmakingthehopkeeptheballhighacrossyourfacesothedefendercannotslapitaway. ProHopfinishandinsidehandfinishwithCoachJoeWootten:CoachWootten'sBasketballCamp:FootworkandFinishingDrills: "Floater"("Runner")finish Thefloaterisusedwhenyoudribble-drivearoundyourdefender,butthereisabig,talldefenderwaitinginsidetoblockyourshot.Usethefloatertolaunchtheballhighoverthedefender'soutstretchedarmsandhands.Stopshortofthebigdefender,undercontrol,andavoidthecharge. Youhavetopracticethisalottogetgoodatit.Developtouchfortheshot,asyoucouldbeshootingthisanywherefromthemid-laneareatojustinsidethefree-throwline-sothedistancemayvary.Andtheheightofarcmayvarydependingupontheheightandreachofthedefender.Itisalowpercentageshotforsomeonewhohasnotpracticeditalot. Therearetwowaystoexecutethefloater,eithertheone-footedorthetwo-footedfloater.Andyoucanshootiteitherrightorleft-handed. Fortheone-footedfloater,usethesamefootworkasastandardsimplelay-up.Ifyouareshootingwithyourrighthand,plantandjumpofftheleftfoot.Gohighintotheairasverticalaspossibletostopyourforwardmomentum.Usingthe"push"releasedescribedabove,releasetheballwithasofttouchinahigharcoverthedefender.
