IhaveheardsomepeoplecallthesediagramsTchalenkodiagrams,butIdisagreewiththisbecause,althoughTchalenko(1968)usedtheterminology,henevercitedRiedel(1929).Forme,Riedelshearsareawell-documentedphenomenaassociatedwithstrike-slipfaultsdevelopedinrelativelyhomogeneousrock-typesandtypically(butnotalways)inacoversequenceoveratranscurrentbasementstructure.Thereareexceptionsandmodificationstothisgeneralview,mainlyasafunctionoftheorientationoftheprincipalstressaxesrelativetotheprincipaldisplacementzonethathasdevelopedinthesamedeformationregime.However,thegeneraldescriptionisadequateforthethesisofthispost.Thisgeneralviewisconsistentwiththegoodcorrelationofstructuresdevelopedintheoriginalmodelingoffeaturesdevelopedinclaylayersoverashearedsubstratewiththoseseeninnature.Therearecharacteristicangularrelationshipsandkinematicsassociatedwiththestructuresthatdevelopovertimeandunderafairlyconsistentlyorientedstressregime(diagramabove).ThebasicgeometryoftheRiedelstructureconsistsofconjugateshearbandsarrangedinen-echelonarraysanddenotedbyRandR’.TheotherimportantstructureisthePsurface.ThesequentialdevelopmentofshearsurfacesinnaturalRiedelsystemsispoorlyunderstood,butthegeneralconsensusisthatRandPshearsdevelopbeforetheR’shears,whichformatamuchhigherangletotheprincipaldisplacementzone.Justasimportantly,individualshearsgenerallyremainactiveaftertheothersheartypesdevelop.Thismeansthat,astheshearzoneevolves,thestrainwithintheRiedelsystemisaccommodatedbysynchronousmovementonallfracturescomprisingthezone.
