ClassroomImplications Comparedtoshort-termmemory,workingmemoryplaysamoreinfluentialroleinstudents’academicperformance.Thisisbecausemanyacademictasksinvolvemultiplestepswithintermediatesolutions,andstudentsneedtorememberthoseintermediatesolutionsastheyproceedthroughthetasks.Examplesofworkingmemorytaskscouldincludeholdingaperson’saddressinmindwhilelisteningtoinstructionsabouthowtogetthere,orlisteningtoasequenceofeventsinastorywhiletryingtounderstandwhatthestorymeans.Inmathematics,aworkingmemorytaskcouldinvolvekeepingaformulainmindwhileatthesametimeusingtheformulatosolveamathproblem. Verbal(auditory)workingmemory Verbal(auditory)workingmemorytapsintothesound(phonological)system.Anytimestudentsareexpectedtofollowamulti-stepsetoforalinstructions,theyareusingtheseworkingmemoryskills.Astudentwhoisstillsoundingoutwordswhilereadingisrelyingheavilyonverbalworkingmemory.Thisisverytaxingtotheworkingmemorysystemandaffectsreadingcomprehension. Workingmemorycapacityincreaseswithageduringchildhood.Youngchildrentypicallyhaveverysmallcapacitiesthatincreasegraduallyuntiladolescence,whenadultcapacitiesarereachedthataremorethandoublethatof4-year-oldchildren. However,thereissubstantialvariationinworkingmemorycapacitybetweenindividualsatthesameage.Inaddition,internalorexternaldistractionscaninterferewithworkingmemory,limitingcapacityevenfurther. Lowworkingmemorycapacityisnotstronglyrelatedtofactorsrelatingtothechild’sbackground,suchasinadequaciesinpre-schoolexperiencesoreducation,orwiththequalityofsocialorintellectualstimulationinthehome.
