Fictionalcharacterbiography[edit] OriginalversionbyJackCole[edit] PlasticManwasacrooknamedPatrick"Eel"O'Brian.Orphanedatage10andforcedtoliveonthestreets,hefellintoalifeofcrime.Asanadult,hebecamepartofaburglaryring,specializingasasafecracker.Duringalate-nightheistattheCrawfordChemicalWorks,heandhisthreefellowgangmembersweresurprisedbyanightwatchman.Duringthegang'sescape,Eelwasshotintheshoulderanddousedwithalargedrumofunidentifiedchemicalliquid.Heescapedtothestreetonlytodiscoverthathisganghaddrivenoffwithouthim. Fleeingonfootandsufferingincreasingdisorientationfromthegunshotwoundandtheexposuretothechemical,Eeleventuallypassedoutonthefoothillsofamountainnearthecity.Heawoketofindhimselfinabedinamountainretreat,beingtendedtobyamonkwhohaddiscoveredhimunconsciousthatmorning.Thismonk,sensingacapacityforgreatgoodinO'Brian,turnedawaypoliceofficerswhohadtrailedEeltothemonastery.Thisactoffaithandkindness—combinedwiththerealizationthathisganghadlefthimtobecapturedwithoutamoment'shesitation—fannedEel'slongstandingdissatisfactionwithhiscriminallifeandhisdesiretoreform. Duringhisshortconvalescenceatthemonastery,hediscoveredthatthechemicalhadenteredhisbloodstreamandcausedaradicalphysicalchange.Hisbodynowhadallofthepropertiesofrubber,allowinghimtostretch,bounceandmoldhimselfintoanyshape.Heimmediatelydeterminedtousehisnewabilitiesonthesideoflawandorder,donningared,blackandyellow(laterredandyellow)rubbercostumeandcapturingcriminalsasPlasticMan.Heconcealedhistrueidentitywithapairofwhitegogglesandbyre-moldinghisface.AsO'Brian,hemaintainedhiscareerandconnectionswiththeunderworldasameansofgatheringinformationoncriminalactivity.[2] PlasticMansoonacquiredcomic-reliefsidekickWoozyWinks,whowasoriginallyenchantedsothatnatureitselfwouldprotecthimfromharm.ThispowerwaseventuallyremovedfromthecharacterandWoozybecamesimplyabumblingyetloyalfriendtoPlasticMan. PhilFoglioversion[edit] Afterthe1985CrisisonInfiniteEarths,a1988–1989four-issuePlasticManminiseriesbyPhilFogliointroducedanewversionofPlasticMan:EelO'Brian,abandonedbyhiscriminalgangafterbeingshotandexposedtotheunidentifiedchemical,wanderedthestreetsashisnewpowersdeveloped,frighteningothersandbringingthepoliceandNationalGuarddownonhimasadangerousmonster.Eelwasatfirstoblivioustothechangestohisbody,butafterrealizingthathewasthemonsteratlarge,heusedhisnewabilitiestoescapehispursuers.Eelsoonbecamesodespondentoverhisnewconditionthatheattemptedsuicidebyjumpingoffabridge. Fortunately,hewasinterruptedbyWoozyWinks,aformermentalpatientwhowaskickedoutofaninstitutionduetolackoffunding(orasWoozyputit,"somethingcalledReaganomics"),whodesirednothingmorethantoreturntothewarmsafetyofastraitjacketandpaddedroom.EelandWoozydecidedtoworktogetherandcapitalizeonEel'snewpowerstomaketheirfortunes(Eelwantingtogetrichquick,Woozyjustwantinghis"oldroom"back),butcouldn'tdecidewhethertherewasmoremoneyincrimeorcrime-fighting,andresortedtoflippingacointochooseservingthelaw(thoughWoozyhadhisdoubtsearlyon).Eelendedupwiththename'PlasticMan'afterareportermisinterpretedhisfirstchoiceof'ElasticMan'.EelandWoozysetupadetectiveagencyinNewYorkCityandgoontohavevariousmisadventurestogether. JLA[edit] PlasticManwasmadeaprominentmemberoftheJusticeLeagueduringGrantMorrison'srunonthetitle.Thestoryarc"RockofAges"showsBatmanrecruitingEeltoinfiltrateLexLuthor'sInjusticeLeagueintheguiseoftheJoker,whichhedoessuccessfully.HenotablyengagesincombatwiththegoddessCirce,provingimmunetohermagicalabilitytoturnhumansintoanimals.Heislatermadeafull-timememberoftheLeagueandaidstheLeagueinseveralbattles,includingagainstPrometheus,JulianSeptember,GeneralWadeEiling,anupgradedversionofAmazo,aWhiteMartianwhoassumestheidentityofBruceWayne,andQueenBee.DuringthisperiodhebecomesclosefriendswithfellownewmembersSteel(duetothefactthattheyareboth"lateralthinkers")andZauriel(PlasticManlaterimpliesintheJLA:Heaven'sLaddergraphicnovelthathisCatholicupbringingisafactorbehindthis,andZauriel'sexistenceisatestamenttohisfaith).AftertheextendedLeaguedissolvesattheendofthe"WorldWar III"arc,heistheonlymemberotherthanthe'BigSeven'heroes(Superman,Batman,WonderWoman,Aquaman,TheFlash,MartianManhunterandGreenLantern)toretainfull-timemembershipintheJLA. PlasticManhasalsobeeninstrumentalindefeatingseveralfoesbyhimself,suchasaJokerizedversionofDr.Polarisandthe'BurningMartian'personaofJ'onnJ'onzz(MartianManhunter).Hehasplayedsubstantialrolesinnearlyeverymajorteam-upandcrossoverfeaturingtheLeagueofthisera:withtheTitans(TheTechnisImperative),YoungJustice(WorldWithoutGrownups),theJusticeSocietyofAmerica(VirtueandVice,whereheisoneoftheheroestobepossessedbyoneoftheSevenDeadlySins),theAvengers(theJLA/Avengerscrossover)andeventheLooneyTunes(inthehumorousSuperman&BugsBunnyminiseries).IntheTowerofBabelarc,PlasticManisfrozenandshatteredintopiecesbyRa'salGhul'sLeagueofAssassins,aspartofanattackagainsttheJusticeLeague.Thoughheisputtogetheragain,thisexperiencetraumatizeshimseverelyandwhenitisdiscoveredthattheassassinswerefollowingmethodsdevisedbyBatman,EeljoinsWonderWomanandAquamaninvotingBatmanoutoftheLeague.Theheroesreconcileinfollowingissues. ThefactthatPlasticManwasinitiallyinthesuperherobusinessforthemoneyhashadaneffectonhischaracterdevelopment,notablyinthestoryline"DividedWeFall"byMarkWaidwherehe,alongwithotherJusticeLeaguemembers,wasseparatedintotwopeople,hisnormal"civilian"identityandhissuperheropersona,bythemanipulativewish-grantingId.WhilePlasticMandevolvedfromapersonwithasenseofhumorintoaconstantlywisecrackingandalmostineffectualidiot,thenow"normal"EelO'Brianstruggledwiththecriminaltendencieshehadsuppressedashehadbecomecomfortablewithhisroleasasuperheroandwonderedifhehadactuallychangedforthebetteratallorthiswasjustpartofthesuper-hero"act".Ultimately,EelwasthedrivingforcebehindtheothertransformedLeaguersbandingtogethertore-joinwiththeirsuperheroicselves,notingthatBruceWayneinparticularwasapproachingamentalbreakdownashestruggledwithhisrageoverhisparents'murder–havinglackedtheabilitytodoanythingaboutit,asBatmanwastheidentitythathad'inherited'hisskills.EeldemonstratesthistotheotherdividedLeaguersbysavagelybeatingBruceWaynewithagunintheguiseofamuggertoproveWayne'sineffectiveness,anddemonstratethedegreeofpsychologicaldamagehehassufferedduetothesplit.[3]Later,Batmancommentsthatitwasawisemove"underthecircumstances".[4]Later,PlasticManapproachesBatmanforhelpwhenhelearnsthatEel'sestrangedten-year-oldsonLukehasfalleninwithagangofcriminals,andhasinheritedhisfather'sshape-shiftingabilities,possiblytoanevengreaterdegreethanPlasticMan'sown.PlasticManadmitstoBatmanthathedoesn'tknowifheranawayfrombeingafatherbecausehewasenjoyinghisnewlifeasahero,orbecausehewasafraidofbecominglikehisownparent.BatmanlaterintimidatesLukeintoreturninghome,andinformsPlasticManthatheisdisappointedinhiscowardice,imaginingthatEelwouldhaveshownLukefatherlylove;inreality,PlasticManchoseonlytohideonBatman'sutilitybeltduringthewholeencounterwithLuke.[5] Duringthestoryarc"TheObsidianAge",PlasticManandtheothermainmembersoftheJLAweretransportedthroughtimethousandsofyearsearliertothebeginningdaysofAtlantis.Duringabattlewiththeantagonists,PlasticManwasfrozenandthenshatteredintopieces.Havingnowaytolocateallthepieces,muchlessfixhim,withthetechnologyoftheday,theJLAreturnedtotheirowntime.TheretheywereeventuallysuccessfulinfindingallthepiecesandrestoringPlasticMan.Plashadbeenconscioustheentiretimebutunabletomove,whichhadaprofoundlynegativeeffectonhismind.HeadmittedhehadlosthisnerveandquittheJLA,hopingtolivearegularlife.Thisreturntonormalcywasmadeeasierafteranewencounterwithhisnow-teenageson,whichmadeEelfeelthattheboyneededafatherandanormallife.Eventually,BatmanconvincedPlastoreturntohislifeasasuperheroagainwhentheyneededhisshape-shiftingskillsandimmunitytotelepathytodefeattheMartianManhunter,whohadregressedtoaracialmemoryofthelong-forgotten'BurningMartians'afterovercominghisweaknesstofire.Afterafewmorecases,PlasticManispresentatthememorialserviceheldafterthisincarnationoftheJusticeLeagueofficiallydisbandsduringtheInfiniteCrisisstoryline. 52,OneYearLater,CountdownandBlackestNight[edit] Inthe2006"OneYearLater"DCComicscrossoverstorylinethatfollowedthe"InfiniteCrisis"crossover,ayoungmanwithsimilarappearanceandpowersasPlasticManappearsbrieflyinthesuperteamseriesTeenTitansVol.3,#34writtenbyR.J.Carter.Thecharacterwearsawhitecostumewithredgoggles,similartothatofOffspring,PlasticMan'ssonintheearlier1999DCminiseriesTheKingdombyMarkWaid.WhiletheTeenTitansstoryitselfdoesnotidentifythecharacter,pagetwoofapublishedscriptsupposedlybywriterGeoffJohns'specifiesitis"PlasticMan'sson,Offspring".[6]PlasticMan'ssonisalsoshownincostume,andidentifiedasOffspring,inthe2006weeklyseries52inWeek35(writtenbyGeoffJohns,GrantMorrison,GregRuckaandMarkWaid)whenheisinjuredwhilerescuinganumberofthedepoweredEverymanheroes.Eventually,PlasticManandOffspringcometogetherasfatherandsonandbrieflyevenhadanidyllicfamilysetupuntilPlaswasconvincedthathecouldn'tdenyhisdestinyasasuperhero. InCountdowntoMystery#1(2007)writtenbyMatthewSturges,PlasticManisseducedbyEclipso,beingmadetobelieveheisajokeamonghisfellowheroes,andtheonlywayforhimtogetsomerespectisthroughEclipso.HeislaterfreedofthiscorruptionbyBruceGordon.PlasticManmakeshisnextappearancewithinthepagesofGreenArrow/BlackCanary#8byJuddWinick,havingbeenfreedfromastasistubebyGreenArrow.HisDNAistakenbySivanaandusedtoaugmentanamnesiacConnorHawke,inabidtoturntheyoungherointoabrainwashedslavewithastronghealingfactor. PlasticManappearedforabriefperiodinthe2009JusticeLeagueofAmericavol.2serieswrittenbyLenWein.AfterjoiningupwiththeteamfollowingtheeventsofFinalCrisis,PlasticManhashiseffectivenessquestionedbyhisteammateDr.Light,whichstartsafightbetweenthetwo,whichVixenbreaksup.[7]VixenreassignsPlasticMantoteamupwithDr.LighttostoptheRoyalFlushGangrobbery.Thoughtheyexperiencesomecontrolissuesbetweenthem,theRoyalFlushGangisdefeatedandPlasticManandDr.Lightfinallystoparguing.[8] DuringamassivebattleattheJusticeLeagueSatelliteinJusticeLeague:CryforJustice,PrometheusinjectedPlasticManwithachemicalthatbadlydamagedhisplasticbody.ThechemicalscausedEeltosufferfromaconditionwhereittookgreatconcentrationtokeephimselfinhisusual,semi-solidstateandcausedhimpainwhenheeventhoughtaboutchangingshape,thusleavinghiminaninfirmstate.[9][10] IntheBlackestNightcrossover,whilestillsufferingfromhisdeterioratingstate,PlasticManhadhishearttornoutbytheBlackLantern,Vibe,seeminglykillinghim.[11]However,duetohispowerofnear-invulnerability,hewasabletosurvivesuchanattack,albeitbadlywounded.[12]VixenstatesthatPlasticManwasbeingtakencareofatSTARLabs,andthathewouldbeunabletoreturntotheLeague.[13] PlasticManlaterappearedinJusticeLeague:GenerationLost,helpingalargecoalitionofheroesonanunsuccessfulmissiontotraceMaxwellLord.Hehadbeenseeminglycuredofhiscondition,andwasshownretaininghisnormalshapewithoutissueorpain.[14] Later,heaidstheJLAontheirmissionintoHell,wherehehelpsBatmandefeatGeryon.TheLeaguelearnsSatanus'planstousetheDante'smasktobecomepowerful.PlasticMangrabsthemask,whichpossesseshim.TheLeaguescombinesforcestoremovethemask,whichisincinerated,seeminglykillingPlasticMan.However,itislaterrevealedthatZaurieltransportedhimintoanotherdimensionbeforehelpingtheLeagueescapeHell.[15] TheNew52[edit] InSeptember2011,TheNew52rebootedDC'scontinuity.Inthisnewtimeline,PlasticManisconsideredasoneofthecandidatesfortheUnitedNations-sponsoredJusticeLeagueInternational.Heisdeniedaspotontheteamforbeingtoounpredictable.[16]Thiscameoappearancewaslaterretconnedby"Eel"O'Brian'sproperNew52introductioninJusticeLeague(Vol.2)#25(February2014). DCRebirth[edit] InDarkDays:TheForge,BatmanunveilsacontainmentunittoMisterTerrificinTheLunarBatcavebearingthePlasticManlogoandsuggestsitistimetoreleasehim.[17] PlasticManassistsMisterTerrificintothwartingSimonStagg'splottoopentheportaltotheDarkMultiverseusingMetamorphowhohadbeentransmutedtoNthMetal.WhiletryingtogetSimonStaggtoclosetheportalwiththehelpofPlasticMan,MisterTerrificissuckedintotheportalwithPlasticManandMetamorphoasPlasticManshieldsthemfromtheDarkMultiverseenergywhichheisimmuneto.Uponarrivingonalifelessworld,theyencounterPhantomGirlwhohasbeentrappedinherintangibleformandwhohasnoknowledgeofsendingasignal.Whenthefourofthemfindacomputerinthegutofagiantdeadcreature,theyaregreetedbyahologramofTomStrongwhostatesthattheyareneededtosavetheuniverse.[18]MisterTerrific,PlasticMan,andMetamorpholearnfromPhantomGirlthatshewasstuckinanintangibleformsinceshewasachild.Afterthefourofthemmakeitbacktotheirworld,MisterTerrifictriestoleavethethreeofthematSimonStagg'scompoundonlytobedrawnbacktothem.[19]DuetotheeffectsoftheDarkMultiverseenergy,MisterTerrificconcludesthattheycan'tgotheirseparatewaysduetothisinescapablebond.[20]TheteamgoesthroughseveraladventureswhilstbeingattackedbyafigureknownasDoctorDread,whoislaterrevealedtobeJava.[21]Thisrevelation,coupledwiththeteamcuringtheircondition,causeseveryonetosplitup.PlasticManattemptstoconnectwithhisexAngelandtheirsonLuke,whohasinheritedhisstretchingpowers.[22]Initiallyreluctant,thetwobondoveragameofbasketballandstealingtheBatmobile.[23]TheyarethencalleduponbytherestoftheteamtobandtogetherandsaveMr.TerrifcfromtheTerribles,ateamoftheirevildoppelgängersputtogetherbyDoctorDread.PlasandLuke,nowsuitedupinhisOffspringlook,worktogethertotakedownavampiricversionofPlasticManfromanotherdimension.FollowingtheTerribles'defeatandimprisonment,theTerrificsofficiallyreuniteasateam,withLuke,ElementDog,andMissTerrificsjoiningtheroster.[24] PlasticManwaslaterrecruitedbyObscuratohelpinvestigateamulti-dimensionalconspiracy.ThisledthemtofindthatitwasbeingcommittedbyagroupofvillainscalledtheCabal.[25] Powersandabilities[edit] Powers[edit] Malleablephysiology:PlasticMan'spowersarederivedfromanaccidentinwhichhisbodywasbathedinanunknownindustrialchemicalmixturethatalsoenteredintohisbloodstreamthroughagunshotwound.Thiscausedabody-widemutagenicprocessthattransformedhisphysiology.Eelexistsinafluidstate,neitherentirelyliquidnorsolid.PlasticManhascompletecontroloverhisstructure. Densitycontrol:PlasticMancanchangehisdensityatwill,becomingasdenseasarockorasflexibleasarubberband. Malleability Elasticity/Plasticity:Hecanstretchhislimbsandbodytosuperhumanlengthsandsizes.ThereisnoknownlimittohowfarPlasticMancanstretchhisbody. Sizealteration:Hecanshrinkhimselfdowntoafewinchestall(posedasoneofBatman'sutilitybeltpockets)orbecometallerandlargerthanaskyscraper. Shape-shifting:Hecancontorthisbodyintovariouspositionsandsizesimpossibleforordinaryhumans,suchasbeingentirelyflatsothathecanslipunderadoororusinghisfingerstopickconventionallocks.Hecanalsouseitfordisguisebychangingtheshapeofhisfaceandbody.Thankstohisfluidstate,PlasticMancanopenholesinhisbodyandturnhimselfintoobjectswithmobileparts.Inaddition,hecanalterhisbodilymassandphysicalconstitutionatwill,creatingvirtuallynolimittothesizesandshapeshecancontorthimselfinto. Superhumanagility:ThesestretchingpowersgrantPlasticManagility,flexibility,andcoordinationfarbeyondthenaturallimitsofthehumanbody. Superhumanstrength:Hecanalterhisstrengthbygrowingoraddingmoremuscle. Colorchange:TheonlyreallimitationofPlasticMan'spowersrelatestohiscolor,whichhecannotchangewithoutintenseconcentration,forexampleevenrequiringintensefocussimplytoturn,say,hisnoseblue.Hegenerallydoesnotusethisabilitywhatsoeverandstickstohisredandyellowcoloreduniform.Evenwiththislimitation,PlasticManhassuccessfullyturnedhimselfintoanexactduplicateofcountlessred/yellow/black-coloreditems,suchasBatman'sutilitybeltorevenonoccasionposingastheFlashhimself.
