—FFACEOBenBuckleyontheprospectofaclub,September2009.[2] TheWesternSydneyregionwasregardedasapotentiallocationforoneofthefoundingA-Leagueclubsin2005,originallyintendedtobethebaseforSydneyFC.WhenSydneyFCputforwardtheirbidtoparticipateintheinauguralA-Leagueseason,FootballNSW(whichbackedthebid)desiredfortheclub'shomegroundtobeParramattaStadiuminWesternSydney.[3]ThoughafterwinningtheA-Leaguelicence,FootballFederationAustralia(FFA)ChairmanFrankLowyforcedanumberofchangestothebid.ThemainofthesewereinmovingtheclubtoSydneyFootballStadiumintheEasternSuburbsofSydneyandsimultaneouslyreducingFootballNSW'sinvolvementfrom100to25percent.[3]FrankLowy’sson,DavidLowy,wasalsoinstalledasamajorinvestor.[3]Inresponse,FootballNSWmadethedecisiontopulloutitsinvolvementwithSydneyFCamidclaimstheA-Leagueclubhadbecomea"plaything"forFrankLowyandhisfamily.[3]FootballNSWstateditsdislikeofLowy'sautocraticstyleinestablishingtheclubandtheperceivedlackofconsultationonkeyclubissues.[3][4]Anunsuccessfulbidnamed"SydneyBlues",whichhadproposedtoplayattheSydneyFootballStadiumwastheonlyotherSydney-basedbid.[5]SydneyFCenteredtheA-Leaguewithafive-yearcityexclusivitydealaspartoftheleague's"one-city,one-team"policy,preventingtheestablishmentofanotherSydney-basedclubuntilthedealexpired.[6] By2008,asthefive-yeardealwoundtoitsconclusion,FFAannounceditsintentiontoexpandtheA-League,withasecondSydney-basedclubafavourableoption.[7]FFAreceived10expressionsofinterest,twoofwhichfrompotentialWesternSydneybasedteams.[8]DespitetheunsuccessfulattempttoestablishaWesternSydney-basedteamintheformofSydneyRovers(duetofinancialandtechnicalreasons),[9]FFAwerestillstronglycommittedinpursuingaclubintheregion.[10] Foundations[edit] ThecatalystfortheformationoftheWesternSydneyWandererswasFFArevokingGoldCoastUnited'sA-Leaguelicenceon29February2012.AfteraseriesofrunningbattlesbetweenFFAandClivePalmer –ownerofGoldCoastUnited,overtopicssuchascrowdcontrol,stadiumattendancecapacitiesandbreachesofA-Leagueregulations.[11]ThelossofGoldCoastUnitedbroughttheleaguedowntonineclubs,onefewerthanwhatFFAneededfortheirupcomingtelevisionrightsnegotiations.[12] On4April2012,thenFFACEOBenBuckleyannouncedthecreationof"NewSydneyClub"basedinthecity'swesttoplayintheA-League.[13]Thenewclubwouldbesetuptocompeteinthe2012–13season,thoughdespiteseveralattemptsbyFFAtofindabackertoownandruntheclubnoindividualownerorconsortiumofownersdecidedtotakeonthenewSydneyclub.[14]WiththeOctoberdeadlineapproaching,FFAdecidedtopushthroughtheclubbytakingontheownershiprolethemselves.[15]Thiswashelpedbysecuring$4millionfromtheAustralianGovernmentinagrantforthecreationandongoingcostsoftheclub.[16] AsnotableAustraliansoccerplayersScottChipperfield,TimCahillandLucasNeillexpressedtheirsupportfortheWesternSydney-basedclub,[17]sodidthelocalsoccercommunity,withFFAholdingsupporterforumsinMountPritchard,Parramatta,RootyHill,Penrith,CastleHill,CampbelltownandBankstown,wherecommunitymembersdiscussedsuchtopicsastheclub'svaluesandculture,playingstyle,homeground,andproposednamesandcolours.[18][19][20]Followingthecommunityforums,FFAlaunchedanonlinesurveytodecideonvariousoptionsforthenewclub.[21]Itcoveredsimilaraspectsofculture,location,teamcolourandplayingstyle.Afinalsurveywaslaterlaunchedwithaspecificfocusontheclub'scoloursandname.Optionsforteamcolourswereblackandred,blackandwhite,andred,whiteandblack.OptionsfortheteamnamewereAthletic,Wanderers,Wolves,StrikersandRangers.[22] Thefirstthreesignedplayers(Mooy,ElrichandAppiah)attheclub'slaunch On17May2012,formerA-LeagueheadLyallGormanwasappointedChairmanoftheasyetunnamedclub.[23]TonyPopovicwasalsoannouncedastheinauguralheadcoachoftheWesternSydneyteam.PopovicjoinedtheclubafterrequestingtobereleasedfromthefinalyearofhiscontractedroleasassistantcoachofCrystalPalace,afterendingtalkswithbothA-LeagueSydneyclubsandstatinghisdesiretobuildaclubfromscratchasanopportunityhecouldnotpassup.PopovicsignedwiththeWesternSydneyteamtotakethehelmforfourseasons.[24]On22May2012,Popovic'sclosefriendAnteMilicicalsojoinedtheclubasassistantcoach.[25] On25June2012,theofficialclubname,logoandcolourswereformallyannounced.[26]Thename"WesternSydneyWanderersFC"wasofficiallyreleased,aswastheclublogo,thehomeplayingstrip,thehomeground(ParramattaStadium)andthefirstthreesignedplayers:AaronMooy,TarekElrichandKwabenaAppiah.[27]Thename'Wanderers'hadbeenanoverwhelmingfavouriteamongfansandcommunitygroups,withitalsopayinghomagetoWanderersF.C.,thefirstregisteredsoccerclubinAustralia,whoplayedintheareain1880.[28] Popovicera[edit] Inauguralseason[edit] WiththestartofWesternSydneyWanderers'firstseasonapproaching,TonyPopovicwaschargedwithputtingtogetheracompetitivesquadforthe2012–13A-League,whichwouldbetheteam'sonlycompetitionoftheseason.Thesquadwasmadeupofrelativeunknowns,thoughincludedformerJapaninternationalandAsianFootballeroftheYearShinjiOno,aswellasJéromePolenz,MateoPoljak,YoussoufHersi,IacopoLaRoccaandDinoKresinger.[29]On6October2012,WesternSydneyWanderersplayedtheirfirstcompetitivematchofanykindagainstreigningA-LeaguePremiersCentralCoastMarinersinthefirstroundoftheleague.Thematchendedina0–0draw.[30]Ittooktheteamafurtherthreeweeks,untilthefourthroundoftheleaguetowintheirfirstcompetitivematchofanykind;aftertwoconsecutivelosses,oneofwhichthefirstSydneyDerby,theencounteragainstreigningA-LeagueChampionsBrisbaneRoarended0–1infavourofWanderers,withMarkBridgenettingtheclub'sfirstcompetitivegoalaftertheteamfailedtoscoreintheiropeningthreegames.[31] Aslowstartintotheteam'sfirstseasonsoonturnedpositiveasWesternSydneyWanderersquicklyemergedasoneoftheleadingsoccerclubsinAustralia.[32]Ahistoricrecord-breakingseasonintheleaguesawtheclubbreakanall-timeAustraliannationalleaguerecordandwintheirfirstA-LeaguePremiershipaftertoppingtheA-Leaguetablethrougharecord-undefeatedstreak,whichincluded10straightwins.[33][34]Thisfeatgainedtheclubdirectqualificationintothe2014AFCChampionsLeague,aswellasaplaceintheA-Leaguefinalsseries.A2–0winagainstBrisbaneRoarinthesemi-finalsofthefinalsseriesleadtheclubtothe2013A-LeagueGrandFinal,whichon21April2013,Wandererseventuallylost0–2toCentralCoastMarinersatasoldoutSydneyFootballStadium.[35]Thesuccessoftheclub'sfirstseasonwaspittedonfirst-timecoachPopovicwhohadbuilttheteamfromitsfoundationsinthespaceofonlyfivemonths.[36]PopovicwasawardedA-LeagueCoachoftheYearandgoalkeeperAnteCovicGoalkeeperoftheYear.[37]Theclub'sinauguralsuccess,bothonandoffthefield,sparkedmuchinterestworldwide,thoughmostnotablywithinAustralia,wheresoccerhasoftenstruggledtogainmainstreaminterest.[38] TheclubssecondseasonsawBrendonSantalabandAustralianinternationalMatthewŠpiranovićjointheteam.[39]WanderersheldsecondpositionbehindBrisbaneRoarthroughoutthemajorityoftheseasondespitecriticismovertheteam'ssquadrotationpolicywhichPopovicimplementedwithconsiderationtotheAFCChampionsLeagueandtheshortturnaroundbetweenmatches.[40]On26February2014,theclubmadetheirChampionsLeaguedebutagainstUlsanHyundai.AgoalwithinthefirstminuteofthematchbySantalabwascancelledoutastheSouthKoreansidescoredthreeunansweredgoalstowinthematch.[41]Nevertheless,theteameventuallyfinishedtopintheirgrouptoprogresstotheRoundof16.[42]Afterfinishingrunners-upinthe2013–14A-Leagueseason,Wandererssecureddirectqualificationintothe2015AFCChampionsLeague,aswellasaplaceintheA-Leaguefinalsseries.A2–0winagainstCentralCoastMarinersinthesemi-finalsofthefinalsserieson26April2014,sawtheteamprogresstotheirsecondA-LeagueGrandFinalinasmanyseasons.[43]On4May2014,WesternSydneyWandererscompetedagainstBrisbaneRoarinthe2014A-LeagueGrandFinalatasoldoutLangPark.10,000Wandererssupporterstravellednorthfortheoccasion,[44]butaftertakingtheleadthroughaheaderfromŠpiranovićtheteamfailedtoholdtheleadlateinthegame,laterlettingsliptheA-LeagueChampionshipduringextratime.[45]Followingtheloss,theteamwasforcedaquickturnaroundfortheirhomeandfinallegoftheChampionsLeagueRoundof16 Priortothe2014–15season,theclubsignedBrazilianmidfielderVítorSaba,aswellasSeyiAdeleke,DutchinternationalRomeoCastelenandAustralianinternationalNikitaRukavytsya.[48]On12August2014,WesternSydneyWandererscompetedagainstAdelaideCityinthefirstroundoftheinauguralseasonoftheFFACup.[49]Thematchended1–0infavourtoAdelaideCity,withWanderersbecomingthefirstprofessionalclubtolosetoasemi-professionalsideinthecompetition.[50] AsianChampionsLeaguetitle[edit] TheCuplosswasdirectlyfollowedbyWanderers'continuedcampaigninthe2014AFCChampionsLeague;asduetothecalendarformatoftheAsiantournament,thequarter-finals –ahomeandawayseriesagainstGuangzhouEvergrande,resumedafterathree-monthbreak.[51]ThefirstmatchwaswonbyWanderers1–0,anda2–1lossinthesecondlegwasenoughtoseetheclubprogresstothesemi-finals,duetotheawaygoalsrule.[52]Thefirstlegofthesemi-finalclashagainstFCSeoulendedina0–0draw.[53]Inthereturnleg,WanderersdefeatedFCSeoul2–0,courtesytogoalsfromMateoPoljakandShannonCole,whichadvancedtheclubtothe2014AFCChampionsLeagueFinal.[54]InthefirstlegoftheChampionsLeaguefinal,WanderersdefeatedAl-Hilal1–0athome,[55]andon1November2014,WesternSydneyWandererswontheAFCChampionsLeagueaftermanagingagoallessdrawinthesecondlegofthefinalagainstAl-Hilal,winning1–0onaggregatecourtesyofTomiJuric'sgoal.TheybecamethefirstAustralianteamtobecrownedAsianchampions,anachievementtheyreachedinonlytheirfirstattemptintheAsiantournament.ThereweresomecontroversialdecisionsfromtheJapaneserefereeYuichiNishimura,whereAl-Hilalfelttheydeservedtwoclearpenalties.[56]Priortothefinalmatch,Wandererswerecriticisedbytheoppositioncoachinthemedia;afterbeingcrownedAsianchampions,TonyPopovicrespondedbysaying,"Wewerecalledasmallclubyesterday Theclub'sAsiansuccesshowever,wasnotreplicatedinthebeginningoftheA-Leagueseason,withtheteammanagingonlythreedrawsoutofthefirstninematches.Theteam'spoordomesticrunwasputonholdwhiletheteamtravelledtoMoroccoforthe2014FIFAClubWorldCup,whereWanderersfacedMexicansideCruzAzulinaquarter-finalsclashon13December2014.Aftergoingdownto9-men,Wanderersfailedtoholdontotheleadlateintothematch;anunfavourable3–1scorelineinextra-timesawWanderersmatched-upagainstESSétifofAlgeriainafifthplaceplay-off.[58]A2–2drawledtoapenaltyshoot-outwhichfinished5–4infavouroftheAfricanchampions,endingWanderers'runinthetournamentwiththeteamfinishinginsixthplace.[59]Afterreturninghome,theteamfinishedtheyearwithalossinWellington,inwhatwastheteam's44thmatchinallcompetitionsforthecalendaryear Thebeginningofthe2015–16seasonsawPopovicextendedhisinitialcontractwiththeclubforafurtherthreeseasons.[65]Theeffectsfromthe2014–15seasonwerefeltbytheplayersasPopovicreleasedalmosthalfthesquad.[66]IntheirplacePopovicsigned3SpanishforeignplayersandItalianstrikerFedericoPiovaccariasamarquee.IntheFFACuptheWanderersprogressedwithwinsagainstBrisbaneRoar&PalmBeach,thenwerebeateninapenaltyshootoutagainstPerthGloryinthequarterfinal. Intheirfinalseriessemi-finalmatch,WanderershostedBrisbaneRoaratParramattaStadiuminthelastgamebeforethestadiumwasdemolished.Infrontofasold-outcrowdof20,084Brisbanestartedthegamestronglybyracingtoa3–0leadinside23minutesbuttheWanderersrespondedwithtwogoalstomakeit3–2athalftime.RomeoCastelenscoredanequaliserthenputtheWanderers4–3infront,onlyforBrisbanetoscoreagaintotakethegametoextratime.Inthe102ndminutesubstituteDarioVidosicscoredthedecisivegoaltosendWandererstoathirdGrandFinalinfouryears.[67]Inthe2016A-LeagueGrandFinalAdelaideUniteddefeatWanderers3–1infrontofacrowdof50,119.15playerslefttheclubattheendoftheseason. 2016–17season[edit] The2016–17A-LeagueseasonbeganwhenWesternSydneyWanderersplayedhometoSydneyFCatANZStadium,withSydneyFCwinning4–0.ThisgamewouldalsobeWanderersCaptainNikolaiTopor-Stanley'slastgamefortheWanderersbeforehemovedtoHattaCluboftheUnitedArabEmirates.Afterthreeyearswithoutaderbywin,onthe18thofFebruary,WesternSydneyWanderers,beatSydneyFC1–0atANZStadium,BrendonSantalabscoringoffaMitchNicholscrossinthefirst-half.ThreedaysaftertheSydneyDerbytheystartedtheirAsianChampionsLeaguecampaignbylosing4–0toUrawaReds,andsubsequentresultssawthemfailtoqualifyfromtheGroupStage.AfterdefeatingWellingtonPhoenix3–1theyconfirmedtheirplaceintheA-Leaguefinals,withBrendonSantalabscoringtwicetomakehimtheWanderersall-timeleadinggoalscorer.TheteamqualifiedfortheA-Leaguefinalstoplayedthe3rdplaceBrisbaneRoar.Thegameended1–1afterextratimeandWandererslostthepenaltyshoot-out,endingtheirdomesticseason. Gombauera[edit] 2017–18season[edit] TheWanderersbeganthisseasonwiththeFFACup.TheystartedbydefeatingWellingtonPhoenix1–0withnewmarqueesigningOriolRierascoringinthe120thminuteofthegame.Aroutine4–0defeatofBentleighGreensfollowedintheRoundof16.ThequarterfinalmatchagainstBlacktownCityFCwasanepicencounter.TheWandererswentouttoanearly1–0leadthroughanOriolRierapenaltykick.Blacktownhitbackinthesecondhalfandtookthegametoextratime,wheresubstituteJamesAndrewscoredtoputBlacktownahead.Rierapoppedupagaininthe111thminutetoequalise,andtheWanderersheldtheirnerveintheshootouttowinit4–2. WhileawinwouldhavesecuredafinalsberthasBrisbanedefeatedPerth3–2,theWanderersseasonfellapartinthesecondhalf.HavingtakenanearlyleadwithanOriolRieragoal,theWanderersconcededtwogoalstoAdelaidebeforeMarceloCarruscalevelledthegameheadingintohalf-time.The62ndminutesendingoffofKeanuBaccusforkickingoutatanopponentleftthemamandownandneedingtoattack.AstheypushedplayersforwardAdelaidekeptbreakingonthecounter-attack,eventuallyscoringthewinninggoalinthe80thminutethroughRyanKitto.
