Finally,iftheFedwantedtoreducethesizeofitsbalancesheetmorerapidlythanportfoliorunoffwouldpermit,itcouldsellsomeofitssecurities. TheFedhasaninterestinensuringitsbalancesheetreductiondoesn'treversetheeconomicgainssecuredbythebalancesheet'spriorexpansion.PartialreinvestmentensurestheFedremainsabuyerofsecurities,whileportfoliorunoffdoesn'taddtotheirsupply.Sellingsecuritiesbeforetheymaturerunsagreaterriskofasignificantincreaseinyields,theoppositeoftheeffectoftheFed'sassetpurchases.
