FFAthenprovidedNZSaprovisionalA-Leaguelicencetosub-lettoasuitableNewZealandteamtoenterthe2007–08A-Leagueseason.FFAsetanapplicationdeadlinetoNZSandsubsequentlydelayedthatdeadlinetogivemoretimeforpotentialapplicantsinNewZealandtoapplyalongwithNZSsupport. WhileNZSwasgivenachancetoapplywithanewsub-licensee,aTownsville-basedconsortium,TropicalFootballAustralia(TFA)alsoexpressedinterestandpreparedanA-LeagueapplicationtoreplacetheplacepreviouslyheldbytheKnights.[2]However,TFAeventuallypulledoutwiththeunderstandingoftheFFA'spreferencetoretainaNewZealandteamfortheleague.TFAresubmitteditsbidthefollowingyearasapotentialA-Leagueexpansionfranchiseunderthename"NorthernThunderFC",whichwaslaterchangedto"NorthQueenslandThunder";[3]however,thisbiddiedafterexpansionforthe2007–08seasonwascancelled. Aftermuchdelay,thefinalamountneededfortheapplicationcamefromWellingtonpropertybusinessmanTerrySerepisosinthelatterstagesofthebid.Serepisos,theclub'smajorityownerandchairman,providedNZD$1,250,000[4]toensurethebeginningsofanewNewZealandfranchiseandacontinuationofNewZealand'sparticipationintheA-League.FFAfinalisedathree-yearA-LeaguelicencetoNewZealandFootballwhothensub-letthelicencetotheWellington-basedclub.[5]ThenewWellingtonclubwasconfirmedon19March2007. Thenameforthenewclubwaspickedfromashortlistofsix,prunedfrom250namessuggestedbythepublic,andwasannouncedon28March2007.[6][7]Serepisossaidofthename,that"Itsymbolisesthefreshstart,therisingfromtheashes,andtheincredibleWellingtonsupportthathascomeout".[8] DespitethebackingofFIFA,AFCpresidentMohammedBinHammamstatedthatduetoAFCcriteria,theWellingtonteammustmovetoAustraliaordisbandby2011.[9]However,inaninterviewairedonSBSon21December2008,FIFApresidentSeppBlatterstatedunequivocally,"ItisnotthematteroftheConfederation,itisthematteroftheFIFAExecutiveCommittee...IfWellingtonwillgoonplayoninAustralianLeague,thenaslongasAustralianleaguewantstohavethemandWellingtonwantstostay(and)Bothassociationinthiscase,NewZealandSoccerandAustralianFootballarehappywiththatthenwewillgivethemtheblessing.TheConfederationcannotinterferewiththat.".[10] RiseofthePhoenix[edit] Inthe2009–10season,WellingtonPhoenixbecamethefirstNewZealandsidetoreachtheplayoffsofanAustralianfootballcompetitionwhenAdelaideUnitedbeatBrisbaneRoar2–0inthe26thround.ItmeantthatBrisbane,whichbeforethematchwastheonlyteamoutsidethetopsixwithachanceofmakingtheplayoffs,nolongercould.ThePhoenixovercametheCentralCoastMarinerson12February2010tofinishfourth,whichmeantitwouldhostaplayoffgameagainstPerthGloryon21February2010.ThePhoenixbeatPerthbypenaltyshootout(4–2)after120minutes(including30minutesofextratime).PhoenixthenhostedahomegameagainstNewcastleJetson7March,whichtheywoninextratime3–1. On20April2010,FFAgrantedWellingtonPhoenixafive-yearlicenceextension,keepingitinthecompetitionuntilatleasttheconclusionofthe2015–16season.[11] ManyargueWellington'sabilitytoplayintheA-LeagueasbeinginstrumentaltotheprogressoftheNewZealandnationalsideandthewiderfootballlandscape.[12] Changeofownership[edit] Priortothe2011/12season,itemergedthatSerepisoswasexperiencingfinancialdifficulties,bothpersonallyandinthepropertyempire.ThisincludedhighlypublicisedactionbytheInlandRevenueDepartmenttoliquidateanumberofSerepisos'companiesforunpaidtaxes,includingCenturyCityFootballLtd,theclubSerepisosownedthePhoenixthrough.[13] Initially,SerepisosclaimedhehadobtainedfinancethroughSwiss-basedlenders,thenannouncedhehadagreedtoadealwithWesternGulfAdvisory,theBahrain-basedlenderownedbyRacingSantanderownerAhsanAliSyedwhichwouldsee50%oftheclubsold.However,thesefundswereneverreceivedandthepartialtransfernevertookplace. Whiletheliquidationactionwasresolvedthroughanunnamedthird-partySerepisos'financialtroublesdidnotend.Despitethis,hestatedhewouldnotgiveupownershipoftheclub.AdditionalstoriesalsoemergedthatcoachRickiHerbertwaspersonallyowed$100,000inunpaidwagesbytheclub. However,on23September2011,itwasannouncedbySerepisosandtheFFAthatSerepisoshadrelinquishedownershipoftheclubasaresultofhisongoingfinancialdifficulties.Theclub'slicencewaspassedbytheFFAtoanewconsortiumofsevenWellingtonbusinessmanheadedbyRobMorrisonandincludingGarethMorgan,LloydMorrisonandJohnMorrison.[14][15][16] Changeofheadcoach[edit] On26February2013,withthePhoenixsittinginlastplace,RickiHerbertresignedfromthepositionofheadcoach.[17]ThePhoenixhadenduredapoorrunofresultsinaseasonwheretheywereexpectedtobechallengingforthetitle.[18]AssistantCoachChrisGreenacretookthereinsonaninterimbasisfortheremainderoftheseason.Followinga"worldwidesearch",ErnieMerrickwasannouncedastheheadcoachon20May2013.[19]MerrickhadsixsuccessfulyearsattheMelbourneVictory,whichwasseenasimportant.MerrickwillonceagainbecomethemostexperiencedA-Leaguecoachinthecomingseason,retakingthisfromHerbertwhopassedhimtowardstheendofthe2012–13season.[20]GreenacrewasretainedbyMerrickastheassistantcoach.[21] On5December2017,MerrickresignedasheadcoachfollowingthePhoenix's2–0losstoAdelaideUnited.[22]On2January2017,DesBuckinghamtookoverasheadcoach,whileChrisGreenacrewasmadeco-coach.[23] On1March2018,WellingtonPhoenixannouncedthatDarijeKalezicwillbedepartingtheclubattheendoftheseasonaftertheywerenotabletocometoanagreementonhowtheclubproceedsforwardforthenextseason.[24] Rudanera[edit] On30May2018,WellingtonPhoenixannouncedtheappointmentofformerSydneyFCcaptainMarkRudanasmanageronatwo-yearcontract.[25]MarkRudanbecamethefirst-everWellingtonPhoenixcoachtowinhisfirstgameinchargewhentheWellingtonPhoenixwere2–1victorsoverNewcastleJetsintheopeningroundofthe2018–19season.[26]FollowingRound2clashwithBrisbaneRoarwhichendedina0–0draw,itwasthebeststarttheteamhashadsincethe2012/13season.[27]TheysufferedtheirfirstdefeatoftheseasoninRound3goingdown3–0toWesternSydneyWanderers.[28]AfteradefeatinRound5againstAdelaideUnited,Phoenixwentona9gameundefeatedstreakincludingdrawswithPremiersPerthGloryandChampionsMelbourneVictory,andwinsoverclubslikeSydneyFCandNewcastleJets.TheirstreakwasbrokenbySydneyFCinround15.[29]ThePhoenixfinishedin6thplacequalifyingfortheplayoffs.On15April,itwasannouncedthatRudanwouldnotseeoutthesecondyearofhiscontractandwouldleaveatseason'sendduetopersonalreasons.[30]TheywereknockedoutinthefirsteliminationfinalbyMelbourneVictory3–1.[31] Talayera[edit] On4May2019,itwasannouncedUfukTalaywouldbetakingthereinsofheadcoachafterthedepartureofMarkRudanonaone-yeardeal.[32]Inhisfirstpressconference,TalayexpressedhisideaofbuildingayoungteamwithastrongKiwicore.HemadehisfirstsigningwithAllWhitesgoalkeeperStefanMarinovic[33]andsignedlocalKiwiplayers,TeAtawhaiHudson-Wihongi,[34]TimPayne,[35]andCallumMcCowatt.[36]TalaymadehisfirstimportsigningwithMexicanUlisesDávila[37]followinganotherimportsigningofEnglishstriker,DavidBall.[38]On24July,itwasannouncedthatStevenTaylorwouldbethecaptainheadingintothenewseason[39]whileAlexRuferwasmadevice-captain.[40]On18August,itwasannouncedthatPhoenixhadpaidanundisclosedfeeforRenoPiscopo,markingthefirsttimetheclubpaidatransferfeeforaplayer.[41]TalayalsomadeahandfulofsigningsofyoungAustralianplayersincludingWalterScott,[42]JaushuaSotirio,[43]CameronDevlin,[44]LiamMcGing,[45]andexperiencedcentre-backLukeDeVere.[46]TalayusedhisfourthimportspotsigningMattiSteinmannonaoneyeardeal.[47]TalayhadapositivestarttohismanagerialtenurewiththeWellingtonPhoenixwhenheledthemtoa7–0victoryoverWairarapaUnitedinapre-seasonfriendlyinhisfirstmatchincharge.[48] Theywereknocked-outofthe2019FFACupintheRoundof32,losing4–2onpenaltiestoBrisbaneStrikers,aftermakinganextraordinarycomebackfrom2-0downtoa2-2drawatfulltime.[49] On22May2021,WellingtonPhoenixbroketheirhomeattendancerecord,attracting24,105spectatorsagainstWesternUnitedFC.Thisgame(asof22May),isthe2020/21HyundaiA-League'smostattendedgame.ThiswasthefirstA-LeaguegametobeheldinNewZealandsince15March2020,atotalof433daysinbetween.[50] Coloursandbadge[edit] Theoriginallogofortheclubusedbetweenfromtheclub'sinceptionupuntilAugust2017. Inthe2009–2010A-Leagueseason,WellingtonPhoenixFCplayedtwohomegamesawayfromSkyStadium,thefirstatArenaManawatuinPalmerstonNorth,thesecondatAMIStadiuminChristchurch.ThetwogameswerekeytoWellingtonPhoenixexpandingtheirfanbaseinNewZealand.ThiswasfollowedbyplayingagameinAucklandatEdenParkinfrontof20,078attendeesduringthe2011–2012A-Leagueseason.
