Health&AirPollution Categories Topics Health,IndoorAirQuality&Exposure,Research,EnvironmentalJustice,SustainableCommunities,AirborneToxics,AirPollution,AirQualityMonitoring Programs OutdoorAirQualityStandards,PeopleatRisk,Exposure,CommunityAirProtectionProgram Type Information Contact ResearchDivision Email [email protected] Phone (916)445-0753 Airpollutioncontinuestobeanimportantpublichealthconcern.Anumberofairpollutants,comingoutofavarietyofindustrialprocesses,impactthehealthofCaliforniaresidents.Airmonitoringshowsthatover90percentofCaliforniansbreatheunhealthylevelsofoneormoreairpollutantsduringsomepartoftheyear.TheCaliforniaAirResourcesBoard(CARB)establisheshealth-basedambientairqualitystandardstoidentifyoutdoorpollutantlevelsthatareconsideredsafeforthepublic-includingthoseindividualsmostsensitivetotheeffectsofairpollution,suchaschildrenandtheelderly.CARBhassetstandardsforeight"traditionalpollutants,"suchasozoneandparticulatematter.Inadditiontosettingstandards,CARBidentifiesotherairpollutantsastoxicaircontaminants(TACs)-pollutantsthatmaycauseserious,long-termeffects,suchascancer,evenatlowlevels.Mostairtoxicshavenoknownsafelevels,andsomemayaccumulateinthebodyfromrepeatedexposures.CARBhasidentifiedabout200pollutantsasairtoxics,andmeasurescontinuetobeadoptedtoreduceemissionsofairtoxics.Estimatedtotalcancerriskfromallairtoxicsis730permillion.Ofthistotal,520permillionareduetodieselparticulatematter.IfPM2.5werereducedtobackgroundlevels,estimatedhealthimpactsavoidedperyearwouldbe:7,200prematuredeaths1,900hospitalizations5,200emergencyroomvisitsSimilarly,ifdieselparticulatematterwereremovedfromtheair,estimatedyearlyhealthimpactswouldbe:1,400prematuredeaths200hospitalizations600emergencyroomvisitsBothtraditionalpollutantsandtoxicaircontaminantsaremeasuredstatewidetoassessprogramsforcleaningtheair.CARBworkswithlocalairpollutioncontroldistrictstoreduceairpollutionfromallsources.Climatechangewillalsoposeriskstopublichealth.Changesinourclimateareleadingtoextremehightemperatureswhichcouldresultinmoreheat-relatedsicknessanddeaths,increasedallergens(suchaspollen)willtriggerworsenedallergies,andincreasesindisease-carryingmosquitoesandotherpestswillcauseelevateddiseaserisk.Moreinformationaboutcommonairpollutantsandtheirhealtheffectscanbefoundat: https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/resources/common-air-pollutants RelatedResources SoutheastLosAngelesAnnualProgressReports PortsideEnvironmentalJusticeCommunitiesAnnualProgressReports EasternCoachellaValleyAnnualProgressReports
