After he started to learn Buddhism and參禪, he began to見山不是山，見水不是水(jian4 shui3 bu2 shi4 shui3).To him, a mountain isn't a mountain ... 2011年10月1日星期六 見山是山(West&East) Therewasatimewhenmeadow,grove,andstream,Theearth,andeverycommonsight,TomedidseemApparelledincelestiallight,ThegloryandthefreshnessofdreamItisnotnowasithathbeenofyore;--Turnwheresoe’erImayBynightordayThethingswhichIhaveseenInowcanseenomore. --ODE:INTIMATIONSOFIMMORTALITY byWilliamWordsworth Herethepoetdescribeshowheexperiencedasurgeofjoyasachildwhenhewasgrantedanaccesstotheworldofinnocenceandinstinct.Thisaccesstotheworldofinnocenceandinstinct,however,haslostasthepoetgrowsup.Laterinthepoem,hesaysthatthoughhehaslostsomepartofthegloryofnatureandofexperience,hewilltakedelightin“primalsympathy,”andinthefactthattheyearsbringamatureconsciousness—“aphilosophicmind.”Inthefinalstanza,thepoetsaysthatthismind—asopposedtothechild’sfeelingofimmortality—enableshimtolovenatureandnaturalbeautyallthemre,foreachofnature’sobjectscanstirhimtothough Thispoemremindsmeofawell-known公案(gongan4),recordsof禪(chan2)Zenmasters'wordsorbehavior,whichgoesas見山是山(jian4shanshi4shan),見山不是山(jian4shanbu2shi4shan)，見山又是山(jian4shanyou4shi4shan).Thoughdifferentinmeaning,theybothreferstoatransformationofmindwecouldexperienceashumanbeings. The公案isrecordedinthebook指月錄(zhi3yue4lu4),whereaZenmasterstatesthreephasesofhislifeasareflectionoftheprocessbeforeorafterhestartedto參禪(canchan2),tryingtoreachtheunderstandingofdhyana.  Thefirststageis見山是山，見水是水(jian4shui3shi4shui3)whichisordinarypeople’sstateofmind.Theyseethemountainsandwatersaswhattheyare.Theytakethematerialworldasareal,substantialoneandareoftenobsessivewiththisworld.Theycan’ttellwhichpartofitisrealorfake.Theirmindareinfluencedorcontrolledbytheouterworld.Forexample,amanatthisstagemightbecarriedawaybyabeautifulwoman. AfterhestartedtolearnBuddhismand參禪,hebeganto見山不是山，見水不是水(jian4shui3bu2shi4shui3).Tohim,amountainisn’tamountainwhileawaterisn’tawateranylonger,becausehebeginstorealizethatwhatheseesisonlyanunrealillusion.Heseparateshisheartfromthephysicalworldtoavoiditsimpact.Taketheexampleabove,heisnolongerpuzzledorstirredbyabeautifulwoman.
