Buildingconstructionandoperationsareamongthelargestcontributorstoclimatechange,accountingfornearly40%ofenergy-relatedCO2emissionsglobally.Theglobalbuildingstockissettodoubleby2060duetopopulationgrowthandurbanization,whichcouldfurthercontributetoawarmingworld.Withoutdramaticenergyefficiencyimprovementsandenergydecarbonization,projectedenergydemandfrombuildingswillcontinuetodrivemassiveabsoluteincreasesincarbonemissions. Paradoxically,buildingsarealsothebiggest,mostcost-effectiveclimatemitigationsolutionavailable.Every$1investedinefficiencysaves$2innewelectricitygenerationanddistributioncosts.Despitetheirextraordinarypotential,80%ofeconomicallyviableenergysavingsinbuildingsremainuntapped.Tomeetcarbonreductionandresiliencegoals,theworld’sbuildingstockmustreachnetzeroby2050. TheZeroCarbonBuildingAcceleratorbuildsonWRI’ssuccesswiththeBuildingEfficiencyAccelerator(BEA)tobringnewambitionandbuildonthelessons,expertiseandresourcesoftheBEAwithabroadermandatetosupportdecarbonizingtheworld’sbuildingsby2050. ScalingUpImpact Atthesubnationallevel,theZeroCarbonBuildingAcceleratorandparticipatingministrieswillengagejurisdictionsinColombia,Turkeyandadditionalcountriestodevelopandimplementactionplansalignedwithnationalroadmaps.Theseplanswillbuildonexistingcitygoalsandpriorities. Workinginconsultationwithdiversestakeholders,WRIwillalsoprovideaglobalforumtoexplorecommonchallengesandopportunitiesrelatedtobuildingdecarbonization.Forexample,informalhousingmaybringspecificdecarbonizationchallengesandrequiredifferentpathwaysthaninstitutionalandcommercialbuildings.Projectpartnerswillalsoworkwithregionaldevelopmentbanksandfinancialinstitutionstopursuenewbusinessmodelsandfinancialsolutionstosupportbuildingdecarbonization.
