Background: Qingtiangang,literallymeaning"HillHoldingupHeaven"getsitsnamefromtheKMTQingtiangarrisonthatonceguardedthehillsandgrasslandshere. OfficiallyitliesinShilinDistrictofTaipei,butpartsofthegrasslandalsolieinJinshanDistrictofNewTaipei.Thegrasslandlies770metersabovesealevel. TheareaknownasYangmingshannowwasformedbyvolcanoesabout700,000yearsago,formingmanymountainsabout1000metersorlessinnorthwesternTaiwan.Theparkstillfeaturesactivevolcanoes,vents,andhotsprings. TheoriginalnameoftheareawasCaoshan(grassmountain草山).DuringtheQingDynasty,theareawasusedtoharvestsulfur,andmanyofthehillswereburnedtohelpcatchsulfurthieves,Qingtianganglikelybeingoneoftheseareas. SulfurminingatDayoukengCraterinYangmingshanNationalParkstartedintheQingDynastybyaBritishminingcompanywhofirstobtainedtherightstomineherein 1897.Currentlyyoucanfindlotsofoldminingequipmentthatwereabandonedhere.TheYuluOldTrailwasbuiltnearDayoukengtotransportminingmaterials,andextendedovertoQingtiangang.MiningsulfurendedwiththeformationofYangmingshanNationalPark. In1927duringtheJapaneseera,YangmingshanwasmadeasthefirstnationalparkinTaiwan,thenknownasDatunshanNationalParkAssociation. TheareaaroundQingtiangangtoLengshuikengwasmadeintoaranchforwaterbuffalo,andgrassfromJapanwasplantedhereforthemtograze. In1950aftertheROCtookTaiwan,ChiangKai-shekrenamedtheparkafterthephilosopherWangYangming,andcalledtheareaYangmingshan. TheKMTkepttheranchatQingtiangangandcontinuedtomaintainit.Theyalsobuiltbunkershereandkeptagarrisonoftroops. In1985,afterresolvingmanylanddisputes,YangmingshanNationalParkwasofficiallydesignatedasanationalparkintheROCera. In2018,amotherdiedafterbeingpushedoverbyawaterbuffaloatQingtiangang.In2020,thefamilywasawarded NT$3.96million fromtheparkandwoodenfenceswerebuiltaroundthegrasslandsshortlyafter. ThewaterbuffaloatQingtiangangareactuallycloselywatchedandcaredfor.AlthoughtheyroamfreearoundYangmingshan,theyarewatchedoverbytheAgriculturalAssociationsofJinshan,Shilin,Yangmingshan,andBeitou,andwellasthenationalparkmanagement. Inthewinterof2020whichwasunusuallywet,tensofcowsbegantodieofmalnutrition,thereforetheparktookstepstosupplementthedietoftheremainingcattle.ManycowswerebroughttolowerevelavationsforrehabilitationbeforebeingreleasedbacktoYangmingshan. DuetoitseasyaccessibilityandnearbyattractionssuchasLengshuikengandQixingshan,itisapopularstopinYangmingshanandhasaparkinglotsandavisitor'scenter.Inaddition,itisoneofthemostpopulartouristdestinationsinTaipeiCity. Thefenceswerebuiltforfearsoftouristssafety,probablyduetothecourtcasewheretheparkhadtopayalargeamountofmoneytothemotherthatdied.Cattleareknowntochargewithoutwarning.Howeverafterthefenceswerebuilt,thismayhavecontributedtotheirinabilitytofeedproperly,causingsomanycattletodieinthewinterof2020.
