ThedeclineintheshareofmarriedadultscanbeexplainedinpartbythefactthatAmericansaremarryinglaterinlifethesedays.In2016,themedianageforafirstmarriagewas27.4forwomenand29.5formen–roughlysevenyearsmorethanthemedianagesin1960(20.3forwomenand22.8formen). Butdelayedmarriagemaynotexplainallofthedrop-off.TheshareofAmericanswhohavenevermarriedhasbeenrisingsteadilyinrecentdecades.Atthesametime,moreadultsarelivingwithapartnerinsteadofmarryingandraisingchildrenoutsideofmarriage. Marriageratesarealsomorecloselylinkedtosocio-economicstatusthaneverbefore,accordingtoaPewResearchCenteranalysisofCensusBureaudatathatshowsthattheeducationgapinmaritalstatushascontinuedtowiden. In2015,amongadultsages25andolder,65%withafour-yearcollegedegreeweremarried,comparedwith55%ofthosewithsomecollegeeducationand50%amongthosewithnoeducationbeyondhighschool.Twenty-fiveyearsearlier,themarriageratewasabove60%foreachofthesegroups. Marriageratescontinuetovarywidelybyraceandethnicity.In2015,54%ofwhiteadultsages18andolderweremarried.ThisislowerthantheshareofAsianswhoweremarried(61%)butsignificantlyhigherthantheshareofHispanics(46%)orblacks(30%).Thegapbetweenwhitesandblackshasremainedfairlyconsistentovertime. One-in-sevennever-marriedadultssaytheydon’twanttogetmarried Amongadultswhohaveneverbeenmarried,58%saytheywouldliketogetmarriedsomedayand27%arenotsureiftheywanttogetmarried.Still,14%saytheydonotwanttogetmarried,accordingtoaPewResearchCentersurveyconductedinAugustamong4,971U.S.adults. Never-marriedadultswhohavenotcompletedcollegearemorelikelythancollegegraduatestosaytheydon’tplanonmarryinginthefuture.Amongthoseages25andolder,20%ofnever-marriedadultswithoutabachelor’sdegreesaytheydonotwanttogetmarried,comparedwith11%amongfour-yearcollegegraduates. Adultsages50andolderwhohaveneverbeenmarriedareaboutthreetimesaslikelytosaytheydon’twanttogetmarriedasnever-marriedadultsyoungerthan50(32%versus11%).Overall,similarsharesofnever-marriedmenandwomensaytheydonotwanttogetmarriedsomeday. Forunmarriedadultswhohavepreviouslybeenmarried,tyingtheknotagainholdslessappeal.Onlyaboutaquarter(23%)ofunmarriedadultswhohavepreviouslybeenmarriedsaytheywouldliketomarryagain,45%saytheydon’twanttogetmarriedagainandanadditional30%saytheyaren’tsure. Majorityofnever-marriedadultssaytheyhaven’tfoundtherightperson,butmanyalsocitefinancialreasons Amongadultswhohaveneverbeenmarriedbutsaytheyareopentomarryinginthefuture,aboutsix-in-ten(59%)saythatamajorreasontheyarenotmarriedisthattheyhaven’tfoundtherightperson.Anadditional13%saythisisaminorreasontheyarenotmarriedtoday.Majoritiesacrossarangeofdemographicgroupscitethisasamajorreasonwhytheyarenotmarried. Aboutfour-in-tennever-marriedadults(41%)whosaytheymaywanttomarryinthefuturesaythatnotbeingfinanciallystableisamajorreasontheyarenotcurrentlymarried,and28%pointtothisasaminorreason.Fewer–butstillasubstantialshare–saythatamajor(24%)orminor(30%)reasontheyarenotmarriedisthattheyaren’treadytosettledown. Never-marriedadultswithfamilyincomesunder$75,000aremorelikelythanthosewithhigherincomestosaythatnotbeingfinanciallysecureisamajorreasontheyarenotmarried:47%ofthosewithincomeslessthan$30,000and40%ofthosewithincomesof$30,000to$74,999saythisisthecase,comparedwith21%ofthosewithincomesof$75,000orhigher. Nonwhiteadultswhohaveneverbeenmarriedarealsomorelikelythanwhitestosayamajorreasontheyaren’tmarriedisthattheyarenotfinanciallystable(48%vs.33%). Foryoungadultswhohaveneverbeenmarried,notbeingfinanciallystableandnotbeingreadytosettledownloomlargeasreasonswhytheyarenotmarried.Roughlyhalfofnever-marriedadultsages18to29(51%)saynotbeingfinanciallystableisamajorreasontheyarenotmarried,comparedwith27%ofthoseages30to49and29%ofthose50andolder. Youngadultsarealsomorelikelythantheiroldercounterpartstocitenotbeingreadytosettledownasamajorreasonwhytheyaren’tcurrentlymarried:31%ofnever-marriedadultsages18to29saythis,comparedwith14%ofthoseages30to49and18%ofthose50andolder. Therearenomajordifferencesbyagegroupwhenitcomestonothavingfoundtherightperson–similarsharesofyoung,middle-agedandolderadultswhohavenevermarriedsaythisisamajorreasonwhy.
