TheGovernmentofCanadapublishedthecountry’s2030EmissionsReductionPlaninMarch2022.Theplanreflectsinputfromprovinces,territories,IndigenousPeoples,theNet-ZeroAdvisoryBody,andinterestedCanadiansonwhatisneededtoreachCanada’smoreambitiousclimatetargetof40-45%emissionsreductionsby2030. Net-ZeroAdvisoryBody TheNet-ZeroAdvisoryBody(NZAB)waslaunchedinFebruary2021.Withupto15membersthatbringtogetherrelevantexperienceandknowledge,theAdvisoryBodyprovidesindependentadvicetotheMinisterofEnvironmentandClimateChangethatsupportsachievingCanada’snet-zerotarget. InNovember2021,theMinisterofEnvironmentandClimateChangeandtheMinisterofNaturalResourcesaskedtheNet-ZeroAdvisoryBodytoprovideadviceonguidingprinciplestoinformthedevelopmentofquantitativefive-yeartargetsforcapsonemissionsfromtheoilandgassector.ThisadvicewillsupporttheachievementoftheGovernment’scommitmenttocappingandcuttingemissionsfromthesectoratthepaceandscaleneededtogettonetzeroby2050. Net-ZeroAcceleratorFund AspartofCanada’splan,theGovernmentofCanadahaslaunchedthe$8billionNet-ZeroAcceleratorFundtohelplargeemittersreducetheiremissions. Forexample,AlgomaSteelInc.isreceivingupto$420millionfromtheFundtoretrofititsoperationsandphaseoutcoal-firedsteelmakingprocessesatitsfacilityinSaultSte.Marie,Ontario.Thiswillcreate500jobsandreduceemissionsby3milliontonnesperyearby2030. WhatisNet-Zero? Achievingnet-zeroemissionsmeansoureconomyeitheremitsnogreenhousegasemissionsoroffsetsitsemissions,forexample,throughactionssuchastreeplantingoremployingtechnologiesthatcancapturecarbonbeforeitisreleasedintotheair.Thisisessentialtokeepingtheworldsafeandlivableforourkidsandgrandkids.
