Nervecompressionusuallytriggersnumbingpainandlackofstrength.Thelocationsofnumbingpainaredifferentbasedonthenervesthatarecompressed.Sciaticaisnotanameofadisease,butasymptom.Thisisasymptomofapainspreadtothelowercalvesfromlowerbackorhips. Herniatedintervertebraldiscisthemostcommoncauseforsciaticainadultswith1%ofincidentratebetweentheages20to50.95%ofherniatedintervertebraldiscoccurbetweenthefourthandfifthlumbarvertebraandbetweenthefifthvertebraandthefirstsacralvertebra. Thetypicalsymptomsofherniatedintervertebraldiscarebackpainwithsharplowerlimbstingingpainandnumbness.Thesesymptomsgetworsewhensitting,coughing,andsneezing.Difficultiesurinatingandbowelmovementmayoccurwhennervecompressionissevere. Whenadoctorisconcernedaboutherniatedintervertebraldisc,lumbarvertebraCTorMRIisrequiredforaccuratediagnosis.Treatmentsmaystartoncethediagnosisisconfirmed. Non-surgicaltreatmentsincludetakingpainmedicine,rehabilitation,usinglumbarbrace,spinalepiduralinjection,andnerverootinjection.Thesetreatmentsmayrelievemostpatients’pain.Surgeryisrecommendedifthepainisnotimprovedafter6monthsofnon-surgicaltreatments.However,immediatesurgicaltreatmentisrecommendedwhenabnormalurinationandbowelmovementoccurornervesymptomsdeteriorateandcauselackofstrengthinlowerlimbs.
